They only told Burghoff what happened to Blake right before they shot the final scene, the rest of the cast had no idea, so they wanted to get a real reaction out of them.

Damn was THAT an episode or what?!

The MASH scene that will forever stay with me was the final episode when Hawkeye finally admits to Dr. Freedman the reason he had gone crackers. That was gut-wrenching stuff.
