WASHINGTON -- Iowa's secretary of state on Saturday blasted Ted Cruz's campaign over a controversial mailer that aims to drive voters to the polls for Monday's caucuses by claiming they have committed "violations."
"Today I was shown a piece of literature from the Cruz for President campaign that misrepresents the role of my office, and worse, misrepresents Iowa election law," Paul Pate, a Republican, said in a statement Saturday.

Paul Pate doth protest too much.
The mailing was colossally stupid, but the envelope was clearly marked that it was “Paid for by Cruz for President,” and only mentioned the Secretary of State in a disclaimer that it was based on public information.
It is a very loud notice that Cruz will use government to “whip” people into whatever shape he considers good for them.
No thanks!
Oops. Work for the Rubio campaign, eh?
What does the flier look on the inside? What’s the Report Card say?
No, actually I hate Marco Rubio and would never vote for him again.
Now go ahead and explain how it's the same thing as Cruz's libelous mailer.
The link to the entire article is very interesting. It describes exactly how the caucus process works for each party. The Democrat caucus process is more elaborate than the Republican one. Also the doors are closed at 8pm and late comers are not allowed in.
The “outrage” of the Iowa government official could be the prelude to possible criminal action, or a warning that civil court action could be possible by other candidates or the recipients of these threatening messages. Wouldn’t that be “helpful” to the Cruz campaign?
When they call the roll in the Senate, the Senators do not know whether to answer ‘Present’ or ‘Not Guilty’.
Theodore Roosevelt
good one
Great quote, OMG!
I’m not excusing what Cruz did. It was staggeringly stupid; his only saving point in my view is that he’s still better than the rest in the race (not a compliment).
I’m trying to point out that it’s disturbing how much information IS available about voters. There shouldn’t be any more detail available than “these voters were assigned to this precinct, which had these voting results”; if they’re tracking _whether_ someone voted, and making that info available to the public, that’s bad.
So they made it up, but put in the names of all the neighbors accurately.
Creepy. Campaign staffers are recording my neighbors and I.
I think , ‘how would my elderly mother have responded to this’, the answer is, she would have had a meltdown. Creepy, lowlife politics.
Cruz supporter here but I detest crap like this and all those ‘crisis’ ‘begging’ emails.
He needs to fire his campaign manager.
Ugly.
Calling Cruz establishment is truly ignorant.
And Trump pulls the same kind of crap but in different ways. I hate it from both of them.
Vote Rand Paul then. He is actually the strongest on the Constitution.
Pssssst. Dirty little secret......the Iowa Republican Party did a similar mailing in 2012. Don’t tell anybody.
The SOS claiming violations. What violations? I heard this shaming tactic is frequently used. Also, “Paid for by Cruz for President” should be enough to indicate it’s campaign material. The notice at the bottom indicates the data is public.
While the tactic was foolish, the SOS is doubling down on the stupidity.
Knowing as I do the Iowa Secy. of State and former Cedar Rapids mayor Paul Pate, I'm confident he WELCOMED the opportunity to "rip Cruz." He has always struck me as the personification of the term "Republican establishment."
Here is detailed information about what states must and cannot provide to the public regarding voters. There was a law passed nationally in 2002 which affects all states and requires this information to be made available.
