Why voters chose Cruz over Dewhurst (2012)
The Dallas Morning News ^ | 01 August 2012 | Mark Davis

Q: How does Dewhurst lose, with an enviable record, a ton of name recognition and a huge pile of money?

A: All of those things together cannot erase one obstacle: voter ambivalence. Kay Bailey Hutchison herself can tell you about this. No one had any huge gripes with her in 2010, they just didn’t want her to be governor. This loss is not a rebuke of Dewhurst as a public servant; it is simply an embrace of the package Cruz presented to an electorate eager for a fighter.

Q: But Dewhurst was a literal fighter! Air Force, CIA, do those count for nothing?

A: That’s not the kind of fighting that was relevant in this race. The warrior voters sought was the kind who would do battle with the Obama agenda in the boldest tones, without the deal-making and compromises that helped Dewhurst advance various agendas in Austin.

-snip-

Q: But doesn’t everyone run negative ads?

A: Of course, and when they resonate, they work.

-snip-

Q: So why did Dewhurst go to such lengths?

A: Handlers may have accurately assessed that it was his only chance. There was no way he was going to out-conservative Cruz, so the only other option was to try to destroy him personally. One can wonder if Dewhurst would have done better running only the ads about his record, which were really quite good. Maybe he would, if “better” means losing by single digits. This was simply Cruz’s time.

-snip-

Q: Won’t that be called “extreme”?

A: Of course, it will, especially by Paul Sadler, the Democrat Cruz will steamroll in three months. But there is a far more accurate adjective for the kind of conservatism sought by today’s Republicans: “consistent.”

Dewhurst lost because he was a state-level version of McConnell/Boehner. A deal-making drunk who saw his role as holding back the people from control of their government. He was more allied with the TX ‘Rats than with the bulk of his own party.

Dewhurst loves the mud. He could not even wait until the race to start before he started making stuff up and throwing it everywhere.
Plus, he is Rick Perry’s BFF.

Some conservatives by 2010 had begun to figure out KBH, but whether it would have been enough to unseat her in 2012, had she run, will never be known.

Wonder if Dewhurst, presumably a Jebbie backer, is irritated that Perry endorsed Cruz, not that it matters.

There's another reason Cruz won over Dewhurst in 2012, Cruz didn't have that fruitcake Glenn Beck down there in Texas undercutting everything Cruz was trying to accomplish.

Unfortunately, not so this time around in Iowa:

Even Ted doesn't look too happy in that picture.

They left out the part where Ted put in all of his life savings and didn’t take a penny from those filthy New York bankers.

I voted for Cruz because David Dewhurst while sitting in the Lt. Governors seat here in Texas helped block many conservative bills. Unless it was election time, he treated folks with contempt if they conveyed any sort of conservatism. Kay Bailey Hutchison was moderate at best. Go along to get along republican up in the senate. Dewhurst would have picked up her mantle.

Then.....Along came Ted. Constitutional Conservative that has kept every promise he made while running for the senate to the citizens of Texas.

After Ronald Reagan, Ted Cruz was the best vote I've ever cast.

*Bingo*! I love Ted Cruz and it pains me to see so many piling on. If Cruz isn't the nominee and Trump goes on to win the presidency, I hope Trump will grow up and solicit Ted's advice on picks for the Supreme Court since he knows all of the true constitutional conservatives and would give their backgrounds the necessary scrutiny.

Cruz would also be a great Attorney General and at least we know our TX governor, Gregg Abbott, would appoint a true conservative to fill the Senate vacancy. I just don't know if Trump is unforgiving enough to put our country's best interest ahead of his ego to recognize Cruz as a true asset.

Dewhurst is no Trump.

True. Dewhurst has been a Republican for longer, and with more to show for it...

When Perry endorsed Dewhurst, it p*ssed of a huge number of voters. I decided then and there that I could not support Perry for POTUS. Guess he’s finally seen the light!

Yes, Dewhurst has the fact that he’s a drunken RINO pimp to show for it.

It should be obvious to everyone that Cruz won that primary narrowly because he hid the fact that he was still a Canadian citizen.

And, he'll be accused of fraud for it in his next Senate run...costing him the office.

He can stick to his story that he didn't know, but there's not 10 Texans that will believe him.

Perhaps voters were on to KBH's touchback amnesty amendment.

Cruz won because Sarah Palin came to Texas endorsed him and campaigned for him.

“I hope Trump will grow up and solicit Ted’s advice.”

When Trump wins why bother seeking out Ted’s advice on any matter when Trump could save time and just go to Glenn Beck, or better yet, go directly to Ted’s billionaire money man and a friend of Trump, Mr.Super Pak himself, Robert Mercer.

At minimum Trump should be given a portal to that most effective and very secret database that has all are names in it. By the way, it’s called, “Cambridge Analytica”.

Not true.
I voted for Cruz in 2012 primary, and I knew he was born in Canada.
I doubt I was the only one who knew that.
It is public record.
