Why voters chose Cruz over Dewhurst (2012)
The Dallas Morning News ^ | 01 August 2012 | Mark Davis

Q: How does Dewhurst lose, with an enviable record, a ton of name recognition and a huge pile of money?

A: All of those things together cannot erase one obstacle: voter ambivalence. Kay Bailey Hutchison herself can tell you about this. No one had any huge gripes with her in 2010, they just didn’t want her to be governor. This loss is not a rebuke of Dewhurst as a public servant; it is simply an embrace of the package Cruz presented to an electorate eager for a fighter.

Q: But Dewhurst was a literal fighter! Air Force, CIA, do those count for nothing?

A: That’s not the kind of fighting that was relevant in this race. The warrior voters sought was the kind who would do battle with the Obama agenda in the boldest tones, without the deal-making and compromises that helped Dewhurst advance various agendas in Austin.

-snip-

Q: But doesn’t everyone run negative ads?

A: Of course, and when they resonate, they work.

-snip-

Q: So why did Dewhurst go to such lengths?

A: Handlers may have accurately assessed that it was his only chance. There was no way he was going to out-conservative Cruz, so the only other option was to try to destroy him personally. One can wonder if Dewhurst would have done better running only the ads about his record, which were really quite good. Maybe he would, if “better” means losing by single digits. This was simply Cruz’s time.

-snip-

Q: Won’t that be called “extreme”?

A: Of course, it will, especially by Paul Sadler, the Democrat Cruz will steamroll in three months. But there is a far more accurate adjective for the kind of conservatism sought by today’s Republicans: “consistent.”

"All are names on it"?

Geeze - you complain about Mercer and yet ignore all of Trump's political multi-millionaire connections. Way to pick and choose!

Cruz's sincerity and honesty is heads above anyone else running (with maybe the exception of Carson).

"It should be obvious to everyone that Cruz won that primary narrowly because he hid the fact that he was still a Canadian citizen.

And, he'll be accused of fraud for it in his next Senate run...costing him the office.

He can stick to his story that he didn't know, but there's not 10 Texans that will believe him.

What planet are you from? You must be a bitter Dewhurst - or one of his suck-ups. So what that Cruz happened to be a DUEL citizen of the country he was born in by his American mother? If you would do your due diligent fact checking (before mouthing off and embarrassing yourself) you would know that Cruz NEVER hid that fact! You are showing your ignorance by saying he'll be accused of fraud, lol!

Sorry to break it to you but your remarks prove that you are too ignorant to speak for the citizens of Texas. Do yourself a favor and check your facts before making a fool of yourself.

While you're acting like you know what you are talking about, you don't.

Cruz did not disclose he was still a Canadian citizen during the Senate election of 2012.

He hid that fact as he said he, himself, did not know until 2014 when he renounced it officially.

Dimwit.

You did not know he was still a Canadian citizen, you just knew he was born in Canada.

Okay , that is true. I did not know he was actually a Canadian citizen until 2014.

Do you think it would have changed your, or anyone else's vote if you had known he was still a Canadian citizen?

Do you believe him when he says he didn't know he was a Canadian citizen until 2014?

Maybe. Dewhurst was a it of a McConnell type.
It would have, of course, come down to eligibility.
If Cruz could not hold dual citizenship and be a Senator, I would vote no, if he could, I would vote yes.
Admit that I do not know the law regarding dual citizenship as it applies to the senate.

LOL - You're the dimwit here! Why don't you READ about a topic BEFORE posting lies? Cruz's duel citizenship story has been well documented. He wasn't made aware of it until August 2013 - AFTER THE SENATE ELECTION THAT YOU'RE STILL CRYING ABOUT. This is only one of many articles that say the same thing and this one comes from Slate for crying out loud!

To renounce Canadian citizenship, a 4 page form must be completed and it usually takes about 4 months for the renouncement to take place. Obviously, holding dual citizenship didn’t prevent Cruz becoming a Senator. Mariner just has big sour grapes that the drunken pos, Dewhurst, lost - thank, GOD!

"AFTER THE SENATE ELECTION THAT YOU'RE STILL CRYING ABOUT"

You believe Cruz when he says he didn't know.

I and other do not.

But you can be sure somebody will make hay of it in 2018.

There was no reason for him to lie about it. Everyone already knew he was born in Canada and a natural born citizen. You really should let this go - it’s not becoming to nit-pick about something that isn’t even relevant anymore. Dewhurst lost and it still puts a big smile on my face just thinking about it.
