The Wounded Warrior Project, the charity for wounded veterans, has been placed on Charity Navigatorâs watch list over accusations of using donor money toward excessive spending on conferences and parties instead of on recovery programs, according to CBS News.
According to the charityâs tax forms, obtained by CBS News, spending on conferences and meetings increased from $1.7 million in 2010, to $26 million in 2014, which is the same amount the group spends on combat stress recovery.
Charity Navigator is a watchdog organization that evaluates charities in the U.S.
Army Staff Sergeant Erick Millette, who returned from Iraq in 2006 with a bronze star and a purple heart, told CBS News he admired the charityâs work and took a job with the group in 2014 but quit after two years.
"Their mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors, but what the public doesn't see is how they spend their money," he told CBS News.
Millette said he witnessed lavish spending on staff, with big âcateredâ parties.
Two former of employees, who were so fearful of retaliation they asked that CBS News not show their faces on camera, said spending has skyrocketed since Steven Nardizzi took over as CEO in 2009, pointing to the 2014 annual meeting at a luxury resort in Colorado Springs.

TheSalvation Army is one of the largest global service agencies. It is run by a leader of the SA church who works for a salary well under $50K.
I have no source, but I did read that here at one time.
Anyone recall?
In any event, some of my associates that do vet advocacy work say the best you'll get out of them will be a pat on the back, a nice fluffy blanket and a stuffed bear.
I also am aware of one person that applied for assistance through them and got so mired in the paperwork and disclosure crap (giving WWP credit for everything and allowing use of image) that he just gave up.
So...the jury is out...at least for me...but I lean to the pessimistic side on these so-called vet assistance organizations, ever since I figured out 35 years ago that the VFW was just a place to go get drunk in a dry community.
Fox news reporting? This exposed communists liberal club of idiots is worth what? Not a damn thing.
Trump for President.
Or people who have been pushing the program to reform are using the current scrutiny as leverage. People who possibly don’t give a crap about the nominating process but do give a crap about scummy charlatans skimming a luxurious lifestyle from donations intended to help our troops.
Now you make it clear that if defending the Wounded Warriors Project weasels can advance your politics you are going to go there with bells on.
That doesn’t help your candidate, and it is a really scummy behavior to sink into.
The Wounded Warriors Project needs to be reformed or replaced.
Don’t defend them.
One of my troops had his father die. The red cross called the squadron and had already arranged a ticket home for him.
Months later he go a letter from a collection agency for $400 the red cross had referred to them. He was never told of the bill nor notified of any action to collect it up until then.
We wound up passing the hat for some relief but he got stuck with part of the bill. When the collection agency found out the circumstances from our commander, they treated him pretty well considering.
In later actions we always referred the troops to the Salvation Army who took much better care of them in times of family strife.
My father told me the same thing!
I've read that it is the most efficient one out there. It is also the only one I give to.
