Rarely and perhaps not in modern times has a presidential campaign more resembled the classic 1957 film, "A Face in the Crowd." Written by Budd Schulberg and starring Andy Griffith, Patricia Neal and Walter Matthau, the storyline follows an Arkansas hayseed named Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes (Griffith), whom Marcia Jeffries (Neal) discovers in a county jail.
Jeffries has a local radio show on which she interviews interesting characters. She finds Rhodes irresistible and puts him on the air. Rhodes becomes a sensation, eventually climbing the ladder to his own network TV show and then, as politicians approach him for endorsements, a self-described kingmaker...

Implies his opponent is corrupt because of a loan from a bank Trump owns shares in.
In effect tells limited government conservarives to kiss off Then sides with the GOPES and gets their endorsements by backing expanded government mandated Ethanol because he thinks dumping this junk inro your gas tank will help him win IOWA . Which also begs the question of Just how heavily invested is he in Ethanol ?
Apparently those prefering a candidate that supports and wants more government mandates and subsides especially for a product like enthanol which is a boon doggle means nothing to them. Well it does ro me....
You can disagree with Trump ... But you can’t deny that he has been courageous and principled ...”
I don’t disagree with a lot of what Trump says, but he has changed positions so often, I don’t know what he will do as POTUS. I oppose him specifically because he appears to lack principles. Is he as bad as Hillary? No one since LBJ comes close.
Trump is the Tony Robbins of politics.
Robbins is successful at making success videos. Trump is successful at creating the image of success.
Both are trailed by a crowd that wants some of the success to rub off.
Very disappoint in Cal Thomas for writing such crab. I guess Cal is GOPe too. He had me fooled. Trump is pulling the mask off of all the uniparty agents.

. . . .and keeping his on.
Trump SAYS he wants to make America great again. Who are you to demand answers from the Great and Powerful Trump?
No kidding. Beck nailed it.
Jack Smurch.
I never much cared for “A Face in the Crowd.” Seemed too innately propagandistic, always showing the general public as brain-dead rubes eating up Rhodes’ nonsense, and the media elite the savvy, worldly smart-set who were capable of discernment, if not guile. But I’m invariably put off by ‘message’ movies anyway, siding with Louis B. Mayer’s attitude over Dore Schary’s, when it comes to such things. And Griffith’s lack of subtlety made the whole endeavor seem all the more ham-fisted to me.
“Trump is the Tony Robbins of politics.”
So now Trump is both Lonesome Rhodes and Tony Robbins.
They are very different. The only thing the fictional Lonesome Rhodes and Tony Robbins have in common is the ability to influence other people.
Neither the fictional Lonesome Rhodes or Tony Robbins are capable of making billions in construction and real estate. Neither are capable of leading in the presidential race while spending little money and while opposed by everyone in the media and the establishment. Neither are capable of taking positions that are attacked by the media and sticking by those positions when attacked.
Try another name.
Good comparison. I’ve also seen him compared to the Wizard of Oz or Elmer Gantry.
Vince, the Sham Wow guy.
Sorry.
The reason this meme hasn’t got ‘legs’ is that it’s childishly superficial.
Very well said! I'd like to see more people here speak up like you do.
Besides, he's funnier in “No Time for Sergeants.””
I doubt the person who posted this even saw the movie or knows who the character Lonesome Rhodes was.
I thought the movie was ok but was very over rated and not realistic.
I thought Patricia Neal was very good in the film. But she was good in so many movies such as HUD, Breakfast at Tiffany's and others.
This is a little low for Cal Thomas. Donald Trump has been a public figure in the US for over 30 years. He has written numerous books and spoken on issues of the day. He is not a Johnny Come Lately and I think most folks agree with Trump what you see is what you get. He is not a chameleon in fact he is quite outspoken and honest with his opinions. You can love him or hate him but he’s not Lonesome Roads by any yardstick. This is just foolish talk by a person who should know better.
About a year ago, I was sitting with some actors friends (including my husband) in a NY diner and the movie came up in conversation. My husband disagreed with his friends that Griffith was brilliant; he thought he was so in-your-face that it was off putting. That’s the way I always felt about it. Andy was a wonderful actor/performer so I’m sure it might have been the direction. He’s so much more subtle in his tv show.
This is my least favorite of Budd’s movies. I much prefer On the Waterfront and The Harder They Fall. Fantastic novelist as well!
Yes, “On the Waterfront” and “The Harder They Fall” are VASTLY better movies. Stronger in every department. It always struck me as odd how about fifteen or twenty years ago that “Face” seemed to be suddenly re-discovered by the intelligensia, and became the recipient of endless raves and quotes. And Griffith’s Rhodes persona was so overdone, nobody in the 1950s would have fallen for it. And the rural public was never as two-diminsionally naive as the filmmakers love to present. Rhodes needed more subtelty, more of an easy-going Arthur Godfrey quality (and wasn’t Godfrey even partly an inspiration for the character?). THEN, it might have worked, been more believable.
Senile ravings from a court jester inside the beltway.
I think you’re right about Arthur Godfrey. I doubt many people here - perhaps including the poster - even remember who he was. Rhodes is one of those characters who seems to fit any celebrity who annoys one. So naturally the elites would glom onto him. Elmer Gantry is another one.
Have you ever seen Budd Schulberg’s tv version of “What Makes Sammy Run” which starred Larry Blyden? My father saw it and loved it and talked about it for years. I was wondering if you, in your quest to find great films, ever came across it. I always liked Larry Blyden and he died so prematurely.
Never saw “What Makes Sammy Run,” although I used to see dusty old copies of the book everywhere, and eventually meant to pick it up and read it. Larry Blyden was actually quite a good actor. I particularly remember him giving a terrific performance in a last-season “Route 66” episode. Always seemed surprising that he veered off in the direction of being a game-show host, for the syndicated “What’s My Line.”
