Six of the Royal Navy's most modern warships - worth £1billion each - all need new engines because they keep breaking down, it was revealed today.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that its Type 45 destroyers need holes cut in their sides during major refits.
The ships, which have two engines already and are all less than ten years old, will need another engine to increase power amid concerns over their reliability.
Troubled waters: HMS Daring, the first of six destroyers ordered by the Royal Navy, lost power in the Atlantic on her first voyage to the US in 2009
The work will be staggered over a period of years so some ships remain available for operational commitments at all times.
The move follows reports of persistent problems with the engines and power systems on the ships which cost £1 billion each.
In 2014, HMS Dauntless had to abandon a training exercise and in 2009 HMS Daring lost power in the Atlantic on her first voyage to the US.
Each of the ships, which are described as 'part of the backbone of the Royal Navy', are fitted with two engines - a gas turbine and a diesel generator.
A Royal Navy source said the most likely action will be to add as many as two generators to 'bolster the power that's already there'.
He accepted that carrying out such maintenance just a few years into the ships' service was not 'normal'.

were the engines Made In China ?
Too bad..
all those necessary billions are already earmarked for the “refugee widows and children” expected this spring...
Lucas electrics?
Mr. niteowl77
What happened to the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty?
LOL! A frieng of mine had an old 440 BSA years ago and had to completely replace the electrical system on it. He referred to Lucas As “Prince of Darkness.”
Lord Jackie Fisher must be spinning in his grave.
Probably British made, with electrics by Lucas.
I had a MGB in the 60’s...crummy engine.
Who covers the cost if replacing all the engines? The government due to bad specs or the manufacturers?
Depends on (a) the exact problem, and (b) the way the contract was written. I was involved in construction program litigation for a few years. We kept telling our clients, “Read the contract. Read the contract. Read the contract.”
I had a Triumph Trophy with magneto ignition.
Why do the English drink warm beer?
They have Lucas refrigerators.
LOL...I had a MG...
“Lucas...The Father of Darkness”!
That can’t be British built. I don’t see an oil slick anywhere in those pics. d;^)
“Try to get home before dark” the unofficial Lucas motto.
Why are they still using destroyers, didn’t they lose enough of them in WW II?
Hahahahahahahaha!
