Trump-Less Debate Is Second-Lowest Rated Of The Primary

Early Nielsen ratings show that Thursday night's Fox News debate was the second-lowest rated debate of the primary season, according to a CNN report.

Without Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump participating, the debate got an 8.4 Nielsen rating, according to the report.

Thursday's rating would be much smaller than the 15.9 Nielsen rating for the first GOP debate hosted by Fox News in August.

Trump appeared at that debate, and clashed memorably with moderator Megyn Kelly when she asked him about his comments regarding women. A record 25 million people tuned in for the debate.

Fox certainly took a hit w/o Trump, but the debate still drew more viewers than the two Democratic debates I dug up the numbers on.

So the debate without Trump still did better than the last debate WITH Trump - I don’t see how Trump claims any victory out of that (though he will still try).

People love a Clown Show; hence, the appeal of Trump.

So in the movie Caddyshack you would be Judge Smails? I rather hang out with realestate developer Rodney Dangerfield.

People don't love a boring show; hence, the non-appeal of Cruz.

There were thousands watching online and MSNBC cut it off about 15 minutes in. Where are CSPAN’s numbers?

Ever watch the movie "Caddyshack"?

To me the establishment is like the Judge Smails types and Trump is pretty much the Rodney Dangerfield real-estate developer character and the caddys are the GOP base that love Rodney. I think Jeb is the Smails kids that eats his snot.

Actually not, they were just bored with the lightweights left.

The clown show was the one at FO Xand the status quo candidates who allowed FOX to act superior to them.

That’s a pretty good analogy. My only problem is that I wouldn’t really want to hang out with ANY of the characters in “Caddyshack.”

My guess is that when you add up all the numbers... those who watched Trump’s event on the several networks that showed it and the people who watched FOX that the controversy generated a lot of interest. Probably the combined numbers would be almost as high as the first debate. But these numbers don’t mean that much... it is whether they translate into real votes that count. We won’t know those numbers for a few more days.

Anyone who watched the Trump event on CSPAN last night probably will tell you that it was one of his very best appearances. I doubt whether all the sniping a the debate hurt him a all. I have no doubt that the gamble paid off.

The Des Moines Register the largest news paper in Iowa had a headline this morning that said Cruz stumbled last night. I was a little shocked to hear the booing on clips this morning when Cruz complained about the questioning. With Trump MIA from the debate last night Cruz took the heat from both the “moderators” and the crowd and it wasn’t pretty. Ted definitely seems to do better when Donald is around. It is a little like an old Lewis / Martin movie... It is too bad that they are currently going nuclear on each other. I thought it was an act to begin with... but it seems like there is some genuine animosity going on at this point. I think the two sides would be better off calling a truce.

>>> He goes to extremes to grab attention, intimidate, and weaken the resolve of his opponent. He’s unusually aggressive (in both fair and unfair ways) to test and probe the mettle and strength of his opponent. Once he knows what and who he’s dealing with, he makes his move. <<<

That is what I’ve observed, and I’m not even a Trump guy. So I give him great respect for his ability to “prepare the battlefield.” And if the other candidates feel they are not getting a fair shake from Trump, what do they expect from Clinton and the media if they win the primaries. Trump is doing the Republicans a favor: if he loses, the nominee will be battle hardened, and if he wins, I will support him, feeling confident that he will continue to run rings around the media and the ‘Rat candidate.

Now whether he sticks to his new-found conservatism, that remains to be seen. But I have no doubt that he is a patriotic American. And that alone makes him vote-worthy if he is the nominee.

I don't think CSPAN measures it ratings. At least that is what I read about 10 years ago. I guess it saves them money. I'm sure Nielsen knows, but since CSPAN does not pay them, the ratings are not released.

RE: People love a Clown Show; hence, the appeal of Trump.

If that were so, then I would have expected this Trump-less debate to be the LOWEST rated of the GOP debates.

The fact is — this rated higher than the previous one where Trump was in.
