Why Ted Cruz wanted the endorsement of the governor of Guam
The Washington Post ^ | January 28, 2015 | Katie Zezima

Since the beginning of his presidential campaign, Sen. Ted Cruz and his aides have touted the fact that they are running a national campaign, attempting to lock down the support of delegates in places far from the early voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire.

On Thursday, some of that strategy paid off: Cruz got the endorsement of the governor of Guam, Eddie Calvo. The Texas Republican sent surrogates to the U.S. territories last year to cultivate relationships in the hopes of securing the support of delegates to the Republican National Convention in July. In a letter to Cruz, Calvo said he support's Cruz's stances on immigration, the Second Amendment and against large government.

The endorsement is part of Cruz's strategy to carefully court delegates with the hope of locking down the nomination with numbers. He and his team have poured time and resources into the South, where Cruz believes he will play well with religious and conservative voters. The candidate has spent time in places off the normal primary map, including Wyoming and Minnesota.

Cruz dispatched his father, Rafael, and Saul Anuzis, a former chairman of the Michigan Republican Party who is supporting Cruz and is spearheading his hunt for support in unusual places, to the U.S. Virgin Islands in September to ask for the support of Republicans there.

"I met with every Republican mayor. I met with clergy in American Samoa. Senator Cruz was the first Republican presidential candidate to ever send someone to Pago Pago, where I spent two weeks in the midst of a dengue fever outbreak," he said.

Now, as the Iowa caucuses approach, Cruz's team is hoping that its long-game strategy will pay off.

Trump is the ONLY candidate who is:

- Willing to fight the invasion of our country
- Able to win in the general election

I would love to know exactly how you know that Trump is "willing to fight". Can you point to evidence that Trump will fight despite there being a political or personal cost? I can point to several instances where Cruz has stood by his convictions despite the fact that capitulating would have been easier.

Regarding the "able to win" argument.. I long ago stopped the practice of supporting liberal Republicans just because the media told me they had a better chance to win.

Not suggesting you are but tweaking his supporters who usually like to pounce on me, kind of like the Obama bots of old.

I think it’s highly likely someone WILL win a majority of the delegates in the primaries.

“Can you point to evidence that Trump will fight despite there being a political or personal cost?”

Were you asleep when he called for stopping mulsim refugee immigration? Did you miss the flak he’s caught ever since, being labeled xenophobic and religiously biased? Fox was gonna take it to him last night with their youtube panel over both points.

Trump has balls and constantly flouts political correctness. The others won’t order toast in a diner without looking around to be sure their selection won’t offend their fellow patrons.

My Dad also visited Guam a little later and came home with a couple of souvenirs--a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.

Marines? My dad came in behind him, radio mechanic for the bombers flying to Japan, but there were still not-mopped-up Japanese on the island when he got there.

I wonder though, did the person he sent to Pago Pago come back? Or did they get eaten?

The people of Pago Pago said they really liked the representative. said he was delicious.

He is in a Republican primary where he knows gullible fools like you will believe him. I can guarantee he will be singing a different tune in the general. He is saying whatever he has to say to get the nomination.

I have little doubt that the the salesman will probably end up closing the sale. I also have little doubt that those here on FR who claim the moniker "conservative" will have buyers remorse.

How someone could be tuned in enough to understand conservatism, find FR and post on it and at the same time be so out of touch that you fall for what Trump is saying?

Have you seen this video?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcUCLwWCihE

Do you really think that Trump just 180 degree reversed all of those positions in a few short years? Or is it more likely that Trump is an excellent salesman with the skill of knowing just what to say and when to say it in order to get what he wants?

You call me a "poor baby". Yes, I am pissed. For the first time in almost 2 generations we have the ability to put a movement conservative in the White House and a bunch of fools in our party are instead backing a liberal who will most likely lose in the general. Yes. I am pissed. Yes I will blame you. Yes I know that you will not take responsibility. You will blame "the media". You will blame the RINOs. You will blame libertarians. You will blame evangelicals. You will blame everybody but the fools that backed an amoral, valueless, big governement, big business, pro abortion, pro Democrat, foundationless clown over a lifelong conservative.
