Donald Trump counter-programmed Thursday's GOP primary debate on Fox with his own prime time event. So whose show scored a bigger audience?
Answer: Fox's debate. But it was the second lowest rated debate of the season. So Trump is certain to take credit for hurting the channel's total viewership.
Fox News Channel's Trump-less debate had an 8.4 household rating, according to early Nielsen data from so-called metered markets.
This means 8.4% of American metered market homes with TV sets were watching the face-off.
By comparison, two of the cable channels that showed parts of Trump's event, CNN and MSNBC, had about a quarter of Fox's audience combined.
So Trump's rivals clearly came out ahead in the raw ratings.
The most recent GOP debate, televised two weeks ago on the harder-to-find Fox Business Network, had a household rating of 7.4.
So Thursday's debate was bigger -- but not by much. The other five GOP debates of the cycle have had household ratings ranging from 8.9 to 15.9.

This isn’t the true story, besides Cspan and CNN many others like Newmax, Oann, youtube streaming, many local and nationwide networks that had feed broadcasted the Trump’s Vets Rally.
Its going to take a while and somebody who really wants to figure it out to know. Maybe a College Communication dept. will get all the facts. I looked at Trump’s listing of all the places to catch the Trump Vets Rally and it was a long list.
Anyway Trump won last night, some polls say he actually won the debate. Drudge has him at 64% most favored to win nomination.

Wow. Listening to vets tell their personal stories and the founders of 22KILL telling their story and watching vets cheer is tedious?
So sorry patriotism and vet celebration is not entertaining enough for you.

Ok, it was a ratings blowout. Works for me - except C-SPAN isn’t rated. But, for talking purposes, you’re right. Great showing on FoxNews!
You’re such a liar. Are you proud of that? Trump told Fox he would consider showing up IF Fox donated 5 million to the vets.
Maybe that’s what you meant to say. I doubt it.
I tried watching CNN but couldn’t take the panel of morons they had on so I watched entire Trump rally on C-span. Ratings for c-span? Waiting.
And then take into consideration that CNN's coverage (the only one I have first hand knowledge of) SUCKED. Every time I tuned in it was NOT Trump so I didn't watch. Had they just covered the event I'm sure they'd have done better.
That is a lie.
Lasts night debate was the second lowest rated of the 7.
And well below average for Faux News.
The people who understand these things in Faux News
know how much money lost last night.
Not all vets are intelligent. Anyone who claims that all vets are intelligent has obviously never served in the military.
CNN would have gotten better ratings (not necessarily better than the debate, but better than what they got), if they actually showed the Trump rally instead of putting up the video of the rally with their talking heads spinning away. They’d cut in and out, fishing for fodder.
Not forgotten, we're despised.
I watched on C-SPAN and they did a great job...no commercials, camera pans of the audience during the event and live open mic coverage after the event ended.
C-SPAN put the major networks to shame with their coverage
Cruz had a very bad night.
lost votes with performance.
You are easily one of the most politically tone deaf individuals I've ever come across on a political forum. Trump OWNED last night!
Sounds like us. We were out for the evening but recorded TRUMP on CSPAN, the prime time CNN anchors, and MNBC, one show after another. It was an all around discombobulating evening of programming, for me.
Don Lemon was on edge last night, and had that nasty little communist Van Jones on, whom he deferred to over everyone else.
Turn out is the big GET, in Iowa, and I wish TRUMP well.
Cruz can’t even win the BLAZE(Beck) poll this morning...he did himself no good last night. He has half of what Trump got, even though they are totally pro Cruz.

Trump 53%
Cruz 23%
We watched on CSPAN. A lot of folk watched online. So CNN was not exclusive.
