Bill Clinton came to the vote-rich city of Mason City on Wednesday night and recounted his wife's life experiences, recited her policy ideas, and ripped into the Republicans a bit. But what Mr. Clinton used to do so well -- and what Hillary Clinton needs, only days before the Iowa caucuses on Monday -- was nowhere to be found: a polished, piercing critique of an opponent, in this case Bernie Sanders.
At an event in Las Vegas last week, Mr. Clinton, 69, looked smaller and his voice seemed weaker than in past campaigns, and people had to strain to hear him at times.
He was at his best as he finessed the intricacies of politics and policy, but he occasionally meandered, leaving the audience, including some who had lined up for hours to see him, seeming more politely attentive than inspired.
At a critical moment when the former president is again answering the call to try to energize his wife's campaign, even some of Mr. Clinton's admirers are wondering if he has lost some of that old Clinton magic.
"He seemed perfunctory, looked gaunt, didn't seem to captivate the crowd," said Jon Ralston, a veteran political commentator in Nevada, who attended a campaign event by Mr. Clinton in Reno last Friday. "I have seen him speak many times, and he just didn't seem to be the same guy. He could still summon stats and an anecdote or two, but not with the same verve."

Has he been taking his Viagra?
You mean that “Old Black Magic,” eh Patrick?
Exactly. Get him an intern, quick.
STDs will do that to a person.
People will always believe in Mr. Bill, for some strange reasons.
Every dog has his day.
who’s your daddy BJ
clintoon was is and always will be a total scumbag
he should be ashamed to show his mug in public...
but it shows you what scumbags the libtards really are.... he is their HERO...
Wow. Bill really isn’t looking well these days. Starting to wonder if he’ll outlive Jimmy Carter.
At 69 he’s no longer putting out the pheromones to make female voters go all wobbly over him.
Yes, and here we see where their “hero” is failing before their very eyes.
Good.
He’s like the Winter Warlock, all old and shriveled with nothing left but a few magic kernels of corn to help the little beastie get up off the ground.
I heard they had a hard time prying him away from for his lineless fishing spot next to the swimming pool.
Something about “Bolsheviks” he was heard to say.
It's amazing how many artists performed this song, both Sinatra and Fitzgerald, among so many. If would help Mrs. Bill, the American people would sing it in unison.
Past his prime. It will happen to all of us eventually. For most people its sad to see the “washed-up has-been” trying to recapture that past glory. In his case, I’m not so saddened.
Now he is just a creepy old man.
Then he benefited with Democrats who were furious that Gary Hart had been drummed out of the race over an affair, and were hell bend on never letting that happen again.
I can guarantee you Clinton would never have been president if it were not for what happened to Gary Hart.
The American people, stubborn as they are, will just deny that Mr. Bill is fading.
That’s a good point: CO people still believe in Gary Hartpence; the American people still believe in Mr. Bill.
Some men remain handsome and attractive to women into their 80’s. He is not one of them.
The NY Times seems to be laying the groundwork for the Dem Party to dump Hillary. She is a lousy candidate. This was all predicated on Bill being able to campaign for her. Obviously that’s not going to work.
I think the American public, or most of them, know it. The Hillary die-hards are in denial about it, but even as desperate as they are, they know the old touch isn’t there.
And if the NYT is writing this, it’s pretty obvious.
