The president will propose in his 2017 budget next month that families who qualify for subsidized school meals be given a special electronic benefits card that will allow them to buy an additional $45 in groceries per child each month when school is out.

The USDA, states and nonprofit groups have been trying for several years now to figure out how to boost participation in a summer feeding program. They've experimented with offering free meals at camps and libraries, where children are likely to show up. And they're using food trucks to deliver meals to more remote areas.

The Senate Agriculture Committee approved a more limited version of the EBT plan this month, at an estimated cost of about $50 million a year. The House has yet to weigh in.
Vilsack also announced that the administration is doing something else to boost participation in the free and reduced-price lunch program. It plans to allow states to start using Medicaid data to automatically enroll qualified low-income children into the program. The idea is to reduce some of the administrative paperwork in signing kids up for food aid, and to identify those who are qualified for subsidized meals, but for one reason or another haven't been getting them.

We have this program in our city and it’s a scam! Anybody can go to a pickup site and get a free (crappy) meal. We check out the schedule and purposely avoid certain parks in the summer because they will be overrun with gibsmedats.
They get food from their EBTs, from those free camps the average middle class family can’t afford, from libraries, from schools, from church, from the food bank, from holiday giving, from various other charities. And now they’re going to get more? Then Mr. Big Spender better pay for that out of his own pocket and stay the heck out of mine.
Sure thing Barack, when you have a dollar for dollar swap of mom’s EBT card, until then, stuff it.

How do we know that the kids will get any additional food? How do we know the food won’t be junk or unhealthy food?
Nah, they’ll just feed them the food kids didn’t get in their school lunches.
Salvation Army does this in Detroit already, a lot more efficient and cheaper. They have trucks going to the neighborhoods.
What is the parent doing with their EBT card now?
Are these kids obese or are they struggling with hunger? Has to be one or the other.
Meals on Wheels will help them from walking miles and miles and miles to get out of the food desert. They won’t even have to get off the couch to have a hot meal delivered.
This taxpayer had homemade yogurt (cheaper than store bought) for breakfast and is making ham sandwiches on 88 cent store brand bread for dinner tonight.
He doesn’t want to feed the kids, he wants another item in the budget that the Republicans can turn down, so they will then be known as the party that starves poor children because they are racists. So it is a win/win for the DEMS as usual. And THIS is precisely what the Republicans have been up against.

I just have never understood why people continue to have babies when they can’t financially afford the ones they already have. To continue to reward them is just plain nuts.
Yes, there are times when families are financially strapped through circumstances they couldn’t control or someone just lost a job and can’t make ends meet on a temporary basis. They could use some temporary short term help. Seems to me like multiple groups are always doing a food drive. Most of them prove to be big scams by lots of scammers.
The states have never delegated to the feds, expressly via the Constitution, the specific power to appropriate taxes to buy groceries for low-income families.
What the corrupt Washington cartel is doing is stealing state revenues by means of unconstitutional federal taxes, revenues that the states could be using to buy groceries for low income families.
And the payback to the Washington cartel is welfare votes for incumbent federal politicians.
Get ‘em hooked on that government teat when they’re young. There’s no better way to build an endless army of incompetent welfare addicts that vote progressives then getting them hooked on gibs.
The Big Food companies discovered a gold mine there, part of the crony system that has told the uni-party chieftains the Federal money spigot must never again be threatened.
