FENNIMORE (WKOW) -- Despite polls showing billionaire businessman Donald Trump leading the Republican presidential race in Iowa, Gov. Scott Walker (R-Wisconsin) feels Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has an edge in the Hawkeye State.
Iowa voters will caucus next Monday night in a race seen as pivotal to Sen. Cruz's chances for the GOP nomination.
In past month, Trump has gone from trailing Sen. Cruz to leading him by six points in an average of recent polls.
But Gov. Walker agrees with many experts who believe Cruz still has an advantage, because of the ground game he's set up in Iowa to make sure his supporters all get out to caucus.
Many believe Trump supporters are less committed to turn out.
Governor Walker, who advised others to follow his lead last September and get out of the race so that Trump could be defeated, still doesn't believe the reality TV star is a lock in Iowa or for the Republican nomination.
"I don't necessarily think the person in the lead represents the majority of the voters," Gov. Walker told 27 News Tuesday. "He may represent a plurality of a big field, but I think things will probably change if the field narrows."
But Gov. Walker said he isn't surprised there has been push back against Cruz from Gov. Terry Branstad (R-Iowa), since Cruz has called for an end to the Renewable Fuel Standard.
The RFS is a federal policy that mandates all gas sold in the U.S. include a certain percentage of biofuels like ethanol.
Ethanol is made with corn, and its production brings in millions to the Iowa economy.
Gov. Walker said he got similar push back for mentioning a plan to phase out that mandate, but feels Cruz is in the right on the issue.
We’ll certainly see how this all plays out.
But again, I feel like I do KNOW this.
1. Trump has divided the base.
2. He has probably alienated a fair number of supporters of
other candidates who have, or had, considerable support
themselves, like Carson’s base and Cruz’s base. But oddly
enough, I don’t recall him being THAT hard on Rubio. On Jeb? I guess it depends on whether you consider it harsh to
almost pity him for being “low energy”.
But I am sure there will be Carson people and Cruz people
who will want nothing to do with Trump if he’s the nominee. Perhaps a number of them will still hold their nose. Perhaps a number of them will stay home.
Trump indeed has his own “personality” problems. I recall the Quinnipiac poll in which 50% of respondents said they would be “embarrassed” by a Trump presidency. I recall polls showing similar numbers of Republicans who said they would never vote for him. I believe the New Hampshire numbers showed a significant number of state Republicans who said they would never vote for him.
He can change that, but his mouth is his problem. He is a fighter. No one can deny that. But he also, with what comes out of his mouth IS the dream candidate of every media member and Democrat who thinks today’s republican is nothing but a racist, misogynistic, bigoted, hateful individual.
I don’t like Trump as a candidate. I don’t think he’s the greatest person in the world. But I don’t think he’s any of those things I mentioned based on what he’s said and probably will say in the future.
But I’m pretty sure a significant number of voters DO think that- or can be easily convinced of it. And when you actually have neo Nazis supporting him (not necessarily his fault, but it is what it is and his take no prisoners talk attracts those types at times), it will only reinforce that for those folks.
We’ll see how it plays out, naturally.
It sounds to me, like worst case scenario, a young Ted Cruz maybe was a little cocky because he was told how talented he was and it went to his head as he kept succeeding.
And then it sounds like he realized that he needed to grow up some.
And now Bob Dole,John Boehner, and John McCain hate him.
Boy, that is just such a black mark on a guy, I tell ya.
I wonder, by chance, if anyone ever has thought that Donald Trump comes across as “cocky”.
And, in watching all of his rallies, you always have a 360 degree angle of the entire venue and can see and account for the whereabouts of every single attendee throughout the whole thing?
It may be a lie. I don’t think it’s necessarily a lie just because “you’ve watched every rally.”
Hey TC - I tend to think most of those are nothing more than jealous.
My understanding is Deace also doesn’t think that will actually happen.
My other understanding is we have a Trump person on here talking about busing people in.
I hope not- and not just for the fact that a guy I don’t want as the nominee would likely win.
I hope not for the integrity of the process. I don’t want any of “our guys” going Obama 2008 Iowa.
Well, the way I look at Trumps’ crowds is a bad wreck also attracts a crowd.
Really?
Then if Trump isn’t a divider, why is he dividing us?
I know, I know. It’s the fault of all the “stupid people” who won’t get behind Trump.
So yes, those who watch them, which you haven't ever done, do see a 360 degrees and we can see the empty seats, if there ARE seats. LOL
Also, at many of the rallies, we have FREEPERS who give "after rally reports", which ARE posted here!
Just like the PHONY stories, that your side posts about hows Trump pays attendees $50 a piece, the LIES about Trump and his supporters are just that.....LIES !
Wishful thinking; didums. LOL
And how was PRESIDENT SANTORUM’S TWO TERMS; luvie?
You truly shouldn't talk about topics you neither know about nor understand.
And neither should you.
Many are there to see the big celebrity. I have read article after article how a good sized chunk of the audience starts to stream towards the exits once the me, me, I, I, and the inevitable name calling starts.
That’s a whopper of a LIE !
I have watched all of his rallies and the ONLY people who leave early....ARE THE DISRUPTERS, WHO GET THROWN OUT !
I, too, have watched close to all of the rallies and did not see people leaving. I addition, I actually drove out to Muscatine on Sunday to the noon rally and 99% stayed till he finished. Trump spoke for over an hour :)
Hope you will get opportunity to get to a rally at some point—if not during the primary season, perhaps when Trump is the nominee ;) It was fun.
I’ve got to add something that might offend some.
America is not ready for a theocracy. The secular part of America outnumbers those of us with faith. And Cruzers, don’t bother telling me my faith is weak because I don’t support your candidate.
Regardless of people’s faith, after 8 years of unfettered socialism aided and abetted by the ‘conservatives’ we voted into office, the economy effing sucks.
People are going to vote with their wallets this time. It’s the economy, stupid. Not faith. Not ‘conservatism’. It’s about MONEY.
And who put us here? POLITICIANS.
Ted has no chance except in Iowa and maybe Texas, except for the horrible economic crash going on there due to low oil prices. So godgunsguts and the rest of you might get to celebrate Iowa. But after that, when the real voting starts, you’re going to be really disappointed.
One of the things noted about Trumps supporters is they are mostly downscale and uneducated, poorly educated or lesser educated...however, you want to phrase it. You prove it.
And I’m sorry, CW, if you become disappointed twice this season.
Seriously.
I know I’ve hurled crap your way a few times, but I’m being sincere.
