Justices extend bar on automatic life terms for teenagers [SCOTUS]

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that people serving life terms for murders they committed as teenagers must have a chance to seek their freedom, a decision that could affect more than 1,000 inmates.

The justices voted 6-3 to extend a ruling from 2012 that struck down automatic life terms with no chance of parole for teenage killers. Now, even those who were convicted long ago must be considered for parole or given a new sentence.

The court ruled in the case of Henry Montgomery, who has been in prison more than 50 years, since he killed a sheriff's deputy as a 17-year-old in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1963.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing the majority opinion, said that "prisoners like Montgomery must be given the opportunity to show their crime did not reflect irreparable corruption; and if it did not, their hope for some years of life outside prison walls must be restored."

In fact, he should have been hung a long time ago.

Since other corruption in what is now laughably called a justice system makes this publicly unacceptable, we have the worst of both worlds. Maybe we will end up with the Swedish solution: 20 years in IKEA for mass murders.

Irrespective of the sentence he should have gotten then, I’m not sure it would even be a good idea to release somebody who’s spent 50 years away from society, having not had to function independently before that. He’d have no idea how to function on the outside.

In dissent, Justice Antonin Scalia said the ruling "is just a devious way of eliminating life without parole for juvenile offenders." Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas joined Scalia's dissent.

Scalia should be the model for future Supreme Court justices. I pray that President Cruz can find people like him, or that President Trump will appoint Ted Cruz to the Court.

The 6 in the majority should have to open their homes to a couple of these murderers. LEAD THE WAY and put your home/health/wealth on the line and maybe the rest of us will follow.

Instead, they make this ruling which will see the eventual release of fiends in to unsuspecting neighborhoods while these SC Justices go to their guarded/gated/elitist enclaves.

From Anthony Kennedy...the man who also barred the death sentence for child rape, no matter how brutal or how many children involved. He is disgusting beyond words.

Well, he’s just thinking ahead to what he’s going to do with his time after retirement.
