Ted Cruz Op-Ed “The Imperial Presidency of Barack Obama” (2014)
The Conservative Treehouse ^ | January 29, 2014 | Sundance

Of all the troubling aspects of the Obama presidency, none is more dangerous than the president's persistent pattern of lawlessness, his willingness to disregard the written law and instead enforce his own policies via executive fiat. On Monday, Mr. Obama acted unilaterally to raise the minimum wage paid by federal contracts, the first of many executive actions the White House promised would be a theme of his State of the Union address Tuesday night.

The president's taste for unilateral action to circumvent Congress should concern every citizen, regardless of party or ideology. The great 18th-century political philosopher Montesquieu observed: "There can be no liberty where the legislative and executive powers are united in the same person, or body of magistrates." America's Founding Fathers took this warning to heart, and we should too.

-snip-

On many of those policy issues, reasonable minds can disagree. Mr. Obama may be right that some of those laws should be changed. But the typical way to voice that policy disagreement, for the preceding 43 presidents, has been to work with Congress to change the law. If the president cannot persuade Congress, then the next step is to take the case to the American people. As President Reagan put it: "If you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat" of electoral accountability.

President Obama has a different approach. As he said recently, describing his executive powers: "I've got a pen, and I've got a phone." Under the Constitution, that is not the way federal law is supposed to work.

Almost all of this forum was for Cruz before they were against him.

Almost all of this forum was against Trump before they were for him.

Trump was for Obama before he was against him.

Trump was for universal health care before he was against Obamacare.

Cruz stood up for 24 hours to stand up for us against Obamacare.

Trump was against Cruz when he stood for us.

Almost all of us were against McConnell and have always been against McConnell.

Trump loves McConnell.

And the beat goes on.

Second Amendment people have been the most vocal and militant force on FR for quite a while now. I wonder if Trump has ever shot a gun. Like myself ( not being a gun enthusiast), that would make his support theoretical, not visceral. There’s a difference. At least Cruz uses a six shooter (maybe that’s what it was) to fry bacon. Finally, I get to my point; I predict a President Trump will be more likely to compromise on the Second Amendment than a President Cruz. Likewise global warming.

As a "Deal Maker" he is certain to compromise on everything. That's what "deal makers" do.

Now if he has no core principles, then he, like the GOPe, is likely to give away the farm and get an ear of corn in exchange. 5 Terrorists for one deserter. That's the kind of deal we can expect from a man who is willing to compromise on everything.

Conservatism is dead as evidenced here at Free Republic.

I’m not a Republican anymore and I am embarrassed to call myself a conservative. I think I will have to say I’m a libertarian or something or I’m nothing.

Maybe you haven’t paid attention, Trump is a concealed carry guy - he packs heat. Just wanted to state for the record.
