22 conservative leaders come out against Donald Trump
MSN News ^ | Jan 22, 2016 | Josh Katzowitz

If you thought the Republican establishment was finally getting used to the idea that Donald Trump could become the party's nominee for president, the National Review would like to set the record straight.

That's because the conservative magazine, according to CNN, will release on Friday an edition in which it declares that Trump is a threat to conservatism and that it officially opposes his candidacy. Included in the edition will be 22 conservative voices who have written essays to describe why Trump is a bad idea for the party.

I'll bet ol' former Senate Majority Leader (and now millionaire K-Street lobbyist) Trent Lott wouldn't have liked Trump either - or Cruz for that matter...

I don’t see how that is relevant or predictable..

I would think it would depend on the content of the writings.

Dug in supporters will not be swayed, but fence sitters might, and if you look at the numbers, trump needs a lot more to win. All this will change as we begin the primary sequence. Candidates will drop out, and we will see where their support goes. If trump can gather enough of them up, he will win, if not, someone else will.

Billy Kristol - the knuckle-dragging neocon troglodyte who pushed for the invasion of Iraq ... Hey, Billy, what happened to those WMDs? Oh, yeah - that’s right - there were none. I hope he does humanity a favor and croaks soon.

Both of whom are a helluva lot more conservative that trump.

Don’t believe me? Then tell me what he’s ever done in his entire life that shows he has a single sincerely held conservative belief. Flapping his gums since he opted to run for office doesn’t count because the criterion is what has he DONE.

Where are the foundations he’s set up to advance the conservative standard? Where are all his advocacy speeches in favor of conservative principles? Where are all the times he’s petitioned congress for change x, y or z? Surely with all his money and influence there should be something other than the countless examples of him supporting democrats and liberal causes.

I get it. You guys have glommed on to him because of his stand on immigration (no matter how unrealistic it may be) and wanting to brings jobs back, mostly Union (democrat) jobs I might add. But please don’t try to convince us that he’s conservative when the evidence is so contrary to that. And you really shouldn’t get so indignant when other conservatives do point out his failings. You’ve made the choice to support a non conservative...at least own it.

True. But how long have “conservatives” been saying that we need to educate people and bring them into the conservative “movement.” Then, when people start looking in that direction, at someone who is more conservative than they are, but less conservative that the most conservative, those most conservatives say.....oh, NO, you can’t come into our tent....if you don’t believe EXACTLY as we do, we would rather LOSE, and give up, and spend the rest of our lives complaining about how screwed up the country is. That just doesn’t make sense to me. But I am a former liberal, so what do I know.....

Ok, here’s the list:

GLENN BECK
DAVID BOAZ
L. BRENT BOZELL III
MONA CHAREN
BEN DOMENECH
ERICK ERICKSON
STEVEN F. HAYWARD
MARK HELPRIN
WILLIAM KRISTOL
YUVAL LEVIN
DANA LOESCH
ANDREW C. McCARTHY
DAVID McINTOSH
MICHAEL MEDVED
EDWIN MEESE III
RUSSELL MOORE
MICHAEL B. MUKASEY
KATIE PAVLICH
JOHN PODHORETZ
R. R. RENO
THOMAS SOWELL
CAL THOMAS

I’m not sure how they define “conservative.” Nor do I really care.

There are some amazing people on this list that I admire.

However, I think it’s time to “weed the garden” in DC. And I think that ripping up some programs (whole departments) by the roots is more important than absolute “conservative purity.”

The nation is at risk, and if you look at all the candidates, Trump is the best candidate to weed the garden. At least he understands what the word “budget” means (more than I can say for the average congress critter).

Would Trump make decisions that some of us don’t like? Of course! None of the lot will be perfectly “pure,” by any definition.

But we need wholesale change right now or the US tanks.

BTW, I will vote for the candidate most likely to move toward enforcing constitutional law. And I will vote.

Most of these so called conservatives are rinos. Where were they when the establishment purged the tea party?

Why they were silent when GOP with Tea Party doing the heavy lifting won back both houses, and gave the house biggest Gop majority in 100 years. How many promises did the GOPe keep.

What of Obama’s agenda did he not get from them that Reed and Pelosi would have done?

No these Rino’s know Trump won’t have a for sale sign and lobbiest better be shopping the return of jobs, close border, energy independence, State run education, bringing back foreign capitol, keystone pipeline.

They just want the same old grease and sell out American workers to the Cheap Labor Express. More Hib visas, less manufacturing jobs, lower wages, etc. Not one of these guys used the power of the purse to halt the rising deficits.

They didn’t need 22 essays. They have one argument, “Trump is a big fat liar and anyone who believes he will do what he says is an idiot.” It’s a pretty stupid argument to make against the frontrunner and likely nominee and 40% or so of Republican voters who support him.

Rush put it very well today:
They don't want to lose the club and they don't want to lose control over it, and it doesn't matter what happens to the country in the process. This is their livelihood, as far as they're concerned. This is their careers. This is their money. This is their income. This is their future. See, when it's their future on the line and it gets threatened, then they'll do whatever it takes to protect it. When it's your future that's imperiled resulting from policies they either don't oppose in Washington or support, you're supposed to gut it up, toughen up, and understand that there are larger things we have to work on here.

“The National Review is a “conservative” magazine? Not since Bill Buckley retired and died.”

Look, the NR has been “establishment” since Ronald Reagan. They even went after Ronnie (and Newt, and Rush, etc.) Rush had an excellent program today, that’s posted elsewhere here. It should be a must read for everyone, because he lays out in great detail just what an absolute pile of $hit the GOP is, and always has been. They don’t give a rat’s a$$ about anything but the preservation of their own little power structure.

“Included in the edition will be 22 conservative voices who have written essays”.

Well at least they semi-honest. It’s basically a list who are, or have been, on the payroll.
