Bipartisan deals -- so beloved by media pundits -- have produced some of the great disasters in American history.
Contrary to the widespread view that the Great Depression of the 1930s was caused by the stock market crash of 1929, unemployment never reached double digits in any of the 12 months that followed the stock market crash in October, 1929.
Unemployment was 6.3 percent in June 1930 when a Democratic Congress and a Republican president made a bipartisan deal that produced the Smoot-Hawley tariffs. Within 6 months, unemployment hit double digits -- and stayed in double digits throughout the entire decade of the 1930s.
You want deals? There was never a more politically successful deal than that which Neville Chamberlain made in Munich in 1938. He was hailed as a hero, not only by his own party but even by opposition parties, when he returned with a deal that Chamberlain said meant "peace for our time." But, just one year later, the biggest, bloodiest and most ghastly war in history began.

I think Sarah made a bad choice, just like she did when she endorsed McCain for his senate run. But I don’t think she’s a bad person or needs to be vilified as some sort of evil traitor. I just don’t take much stock in her endorsements anymore. Look at was being said about Sowell here...
From the graph I will use the year 1925 as typical for the 1920's. That year imports were ~ $4B and we had a $1B trade surplus. Exports were about $5B that year. The total GDP(GNP) for 1925 was $90.6B. So exports as a percent of GDP(GNP) is 5/90.6 = 5.5%
I die then if I must. I believe the constitution is the only road map back home. I don’t believe you’ll get the ends you seek with an unprincipled man who has little use for it. The ends do not justify the means and using those means nearly always results in not getting those ends.
This is site is your home. If you want me to go I will.
Sarah knows Trump personally. Does Sowell?
In 2011 Perry asked for Trump’s endorsement. Trump told him he could not endorse anyone until Sarah decided if she was going to run. If she had run he would have endorsed her.
This was printed in an article posted here a few months ago about an event that took place at Mara Lago that both Ted and Sarah attended. I think it said this event took place in 2013.
It also said that Trump, Sarah, and Ted had a private meeting of some sort. No one knows what the meeting was about but it said the three of them got together privately.
“Join or die” was a slogan of the original American rebellion way back when. History repeats.
Ah.. Sorry, I took it as being directed at me...
These anti Trump yahoos will get on board soon. They haven’t reached “acceptance” yet. They are still on stuck on “Anger”.
Well I can turn that around.
Does Sarah know McCain? The back stabbing vile man that he is.
And yet she endorsed him knowing him very well.
Well this “yahoos” principles are deeper than that.
What exactly is Donald Trump doing that is unconstitutional? He is running in the primaries following the rules to the letter. The GOPe is the entity that may “pull a fast one”.
She endorsed McCain due to loyalty. Loyalty is a conservative value the last I heard.
Trump will try to make a couple of deals, the demonrats will stab him in the back...

And there will be Hell Toupee!
I would love it if Trump kept his twitter account as president. Can you imagine?
Today's big puzzle is how so many otherwise rational people have become enamored of Donald Trump, projecting onto him virtues and principles that he clearly does not have, and ignoring gross defects that are all too blatant.
There was a time when someone who publicly mocked a handicapped man would have told us all we needed to know about his character, and his political fling would have been over. But that was before we became a society where common decency is optional.
Yet there are even a few people with strong conservative principles who have lined up with this man, whose history has demonstrated no principles at all, other than an ability to make self-serving deals, and who has shown what Thorstein Veblen once called "a versatility of convictions."
I guess we will disagree. Wouldn’t everybody be the same if we all lived our lives based on facts?
If it is not your shoe size, don’t put it on.
>> They really have no clue where this is taking them <<
Yes, they forget that a Revolution will inevitably devour its own children.
The French Revolution didn’t turn out well for the old order, the revolutionaries or France.
I don’t trust Trump. Sticking it to the Republican establishment can also be accomplished by voting for and supporting Cruz. We don’t have to accept the nihilistic notions of burning it all down by taking a gamble on the mudslinging blowhard.
The day will come when some of the current Trump cult will wish they had never heard his name. Be assured the ones of us that tried to warn them will be happy to remind them of their error.
Same for the Russian Revolution, same for the Mussolini- and Hitler-inspired Revolutions, same for Mao Tse-tung's mass movements, same for the overthrow of the Shah in Iran, same for Obama's Transformation of America etc. etc.
Those who put absolute faith in the Dear Leader will almost always end up among his victims.
That cartoon is reality of what we are seeing.
Could you give me the link to that cartoon please. Thanks.
That’s what I said when she did it. It’s all back there in FR’s archives...
What about loyalty to the country and basic principles? Was McCain the best choice then?
So is her endorsement of Trump loyalty for her long time friendship with him?
