Against Trump [National Review's Manifesto]
National Review ^ | 1/22/16 | The Editors

Posted on 01/21/2016 7:27:45 PM PST by TBBT

Donald Trump leads the polls nationally and in most states in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. There are understandable reasons for his eminence, and he has shown impressive gut-level skill as a campaigner. But he is not deserving of conservative support in the caucuses and primaries. Trump is a philosophically unmoored political opportunist who would trash the broad conservative ideological consensus within the GOP in favor of a free-floating populism with strong-man overtones. Trump's political opinions have wobbled all over the lot. The real-estate mogul and reality-TV star has supported abortion, gun control, single-payer health care à la Canada, and punitive taxes on the wealthy. (He and Bernie Sanders have shared more than funky outer-borough accents.) Since declaring his candidacy he has taken a more conservative line, yet there are great gaping holes in it.

“All these pundits and Cruz backers
One thing I want is to let the people choice their candidate”

The same goes for Trump backers...

I don’t really care who anyone votes for, but people should at least be honest and stop with all of the vile lies. That is getting old.

Given the establishment has given us staunch conservatives like rino romney, rino mccain, too-often rino bush ii, rino dole,

I hardly think the crocodile tears and fears about Trump destroying comservatism are what thy are truly concerned abot.

I would love better alternatives to Trump and Cruz. Get Walter Wiliams to run. Get Thomas Sowell to run.

You’re one of those vile Trump supporters that thinks you can say anything you want without consequence

Says the retarded TDSer who doesn't want to admit his guy has called legalization of illegal aliens part of "common sense" reform. Sorry sweety, but no matter how much you cry and kick your feet and shriek, Cruz's record won't disappear. Consequently I have no reason to take you or him seriously.

I’ve even been told here on FR that if I refuse to vote for Trump then I should stop posting on FR at all or be banned. I’ve also been called every name in the book for supporting Cruz or for pointing out Trump’s comments and positions, but it should be our duty to vet the candidates.

I have not seen either of those things from Cruz supporters yet.

Inside the beltway writers in sheer panic mode.

Yes, you're right, just like Secret Agent Man is dead-bang, spot-on right = he wrote:
Everyone in the rino, gop-er, vichy reublican uniparty and democrat socialists are against him and worried about him.

Not for the sake of the country, but their own power over the country.

All but two of the featured people are completely and totally transparent, not to mention arrogant and conceited and one, Mark Halpin is a two-faced coward, given his regular butt kissing and praising of Mr. Trump on Morning Joe's.

I'm still SMH and marveled by the inclusion of Glenn Beck! Of all idiots to include and feature ... Glenn Beck!! RLY? LOL & Sheesh!

IMHO, Dr. Thomas Sowell and Andrew McCarthy are worthy of respect, although in this matter, their opinions hold no sway with me.

I won’t admit it because it is a LIE. You’re right, Cruz’s records will not disappear since he put it in WRITING and it PROVES that Cruz does NOT support amnesty.

Of course, Trump’s record is also in WRITING and PROVES that he did/does support amnesty, does support single payer healthcare, does support Planned Parenthood, does support ethanol subsidies, etc.

You lost all credibility when you started with the name calling and lies. Of course, after reading most of your posts, it is clear that you’re one of those low info voters, residing in mom’s basement, that liberals rely on to get elected. That is probably why you’re supporting a liberal like Trump. You’re probably an Obama supporter too! You’re just sad and pathetic!

These people never banded together to oppose Obamacare.

These people never banded together to oppose bailouts.

There are many other examples where these people never banded together to oppose anything, other than Trump.

it PROVES that Cruz does NOT support amnesty.

Which goes to show your basic ignorance on the subject: Cruz defines "amnesty" as a pathway to citizenship. He does not define legalization as amnesty, provided it occurs after the border is secure.

Cruz won't be honest with his record and his supporters are so ignorant they don't even know what his record is. Instead, they depend on guys like Mark Levin-- whose son in law is a full time Cruz staffer-- to learn what his record is, but these people do not challenge Cruz. They're all in bed in the incestuous gravy train of "conservative" fund raising, making millions of dollars off the faithful.

Wow! If the prospect of the Republican nominee having impure conservative credentials can spark such outrage in these people, why are they seemingly OK with a nominee that would almost certainly lose to the Democrat, who is a sworn enemy of conservatism?

Either they are closet liberals or they are very, very stupid conservatives.

“amnesty” as a pathway to citizenship. He does not define legalization as amnesty,”

You really are a complete DUMBA55 ! Try reading something actually factual. If you’re too stupid or lazy to read Cruz’s policy papers then you will remain ignorant. Cruz has been honest and has not changed his position since he began running for Senate. He has consistently endorsed a wall and deportation. Cruz NEVER said that he supported amnesty, a legal path to citizenship, or any of the other crap you spout. Cruz did advocate for immigration reform because he wants to reform the LEGAL way in which people enter this country.

Did you even know of Cruz when he ran for Senate? I didn’t think so. I did and Cruz published his anti-amnesty stance then, which is partly why he won in a landslide. Just because you keep stating the same lie over and over does NOT make it true, which is why you resort to insults to deflect from your stupidity.

Considering Trump tweeted that he SUPPORTED AMNESTY after the border was secure and Trump took loans from multiple banks to fund his businesses and Trump financially supported the Clintons, McAuliffe, and other liberals, I think you missed your own point.

Hey, if you want to support a bought, GOPe candidate like Trump then more power to you or f you want to support a liberal democrat like Trump then so be it, but stop with the childish name calling and constant lies. Your lies have been debunked multiple times on FR. I understand that you want to deflect from Trump’s liberal policies, but since you clearly support liberal, socialist policies then you should really just OWN it.

If you’re too stupid or lazy to read Cruz’s policy papers

Cruz doesn't even read his own policy papers either (or we aren't reading them with lawyer glasses), since after he put out his immigration plan because Rubio began to attack him, he still told Bloomberg and Time magazine that he wasn't taking legalization off the table:

"While Cruz may not support legalization, he hasn't definitively ruled it out. His position, his campaign said, is that he'll refuse to even discuss what to do with the undocumented population until the border is secure."

http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2015-11-13/did-ted-cruz-actually-support-legal-status-for-undocumented-immigrants-

Cruz, the shifty snake, even wanted to have it both ways going into November, until Marco Rubio put him on the spot on the debate stage. For the 9 months previous, Cruz was still telling Chuck Todd or random AP reporters that he didn't wanna talk about his plans for illegals. And in March was endorsing "middle ground" solutions to illegal aliens-- IOW, pointing out that his amendment "didn't take away their [illegal's] ability to stay."

Did you even know of Cruz when he ran for Senate?

I'm a Native Born Texan, unlike Cruz who is a native born Canuckistinian-Cuban.

“Cruz doesn’t even read his own policy papers”

AAWWWW...now you’re clairvoyant too. I see. LOL

First of all, you quoted an OPINION from an extremely liberal news source and the only facts in your quote are: “Cruz may not support legalization” and “he’ll refuse to even discuss it until the border it secure”. Unlike Trump that already stated that he will allow touch-back amnesty and a pathway to citizenship for those he let’s back in.

Everything you stated was an OPINION and nothing was supported by any FACTS. Geez, you should really learn how to comprehend English and learn the difference between OPINIONS and FACTS. Clearly, you struggle with that concept. Are you 12 by any chance??

“I’m a Native Born Texan”

For some reason I really doubt that. If you even live in TX, you’re probably a yankee transplant and you probably live in Austin.

Flames are all they’ve got. They can’t defend Trump’s conservatism because there’s precious little to defend.

Insults and messenger-shooting are all they can manage.

National Review is performing a service to conservatism, which is what this site is supposed to stand for. Supporting Donald Trump over Ted Cruz with this many activists and key conservatives weighing in is pure spite.

First of all, you quoted an OPINION from an extremely liberal news source

Oh okay, so let's just read Cruz say it directly:

CHUCK TODD: You still didn't say what you’d do with the 11 million.

TED CRUZ: Well, my view is first, we secure the borders and solve the problem of illegal immigration. And then I think we can have a conversation about what to do about the people who remain here. I don't think the American people will accept any solution until we demonstrate step number one, we can secure the border.

CHUCK TODD: So anything's on the table? Potentially deportation or not deportation, but anything's on the table for the 11 million--

TED CRUZ: I think we should secure the border and then have a conversation at that point. Stop using the Washington approach of I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today. The American people aren’t going for it.

http://www.politicususa.com/2015/07/05/ted-flops-cruz-falls-asked-solve-immigration-problem.html

Unlike Trump that already stated that he will allow touch-back amnesty

Touch-back amnesty implies they just go to the embassy and are right back over to the US. Trump has only ever mentioned that they will go through a legal process based on merit, and has explicitly stated that the "expedited" process applies to all immigrants, not just to people who were formerly in the US.

Please...Politico? Why don’t you quote DU?

Geez...Nothing in your conversation quote implies or explicitly states that Cruz supports ANY type of amnesty or legalization. All it states is that he would NOT even discuss ANY legalization options until after the border is secure. You’re the only one reading between the lines and making the assumption that Cruz supports amnesty simply because he refused to talk about it until after the border is secure. I agree with his position. We should NOT even discuss legalization or letting anyone back in until AFTER the border is secure.

“Touch-back amnesty implies “

That is YOUR OPINION again. Touchback amnesty just means that Trump would deport the illegals and then if they came back legally, Trump would let them stay. Trump only stated that he would keep out the “criminals and rapists”, which implies that he would potentially let everyone else back in. Of course, Trump said the process would be “expedited” so that just means, the illegals will be back, with Trump’s blessing, faster than we can get them all deported. Trump apparently is willing to do mass legalizations unlike Cruz.
