Snow Coating Cripples DC Commute, Leaves Drivers Stranded

WASHINGTON (WJZ)—The D.C. Metro area got a nasty taste of what’s to come this weekend.

Chaos on the roads with just an inch of snow last night.

If Wednesday night is any indication of what we’ll see this weekend, then you need to start planning ahead and avoid being outside at all costs.

On Wednesday traffic at a standstill for miles.

Collisions and spin outs, all from an inch of snow and black ice that coated the DC area.

It’s an ugly preview of what’s to come this weekend when we’re expected to be pounded with two feet of snow.

Many of the roads were not pre-treated which attributed to the crippling conditions.

“What we experienced last evening from this snow event was nowhere near what the forecast had been for the weather in Maryland,” said Pete Rahn, Secretary of Transportation.

After sitting for more than 5 hours some chose to ditch their cars and walk home instead.

“I hope they would have anticipated this better and treated the roads,” said one driver.

It’s a nightmare people are hoping to not re-live, as the area prepares for one of the worst blizzards in recent history.

I just saw that Charlotte is suppose to get a half to full inch of ice/sleet/hail tomorrow, instead of snow. I prefer snow.

I went to high school just outside DC (decades ago), and people in that region simply don’t know how to deal with snow. Two inches on the ground in the a.m. and schools got closed.

If the non-essential workers in D.C. were to stay home, there would be nobody on the roads.

DC gets now every year. You would think they would get it together.

Half the issue is that we get people moving to this place from all over the country, either "need to get there ten minutes ago" New Yorkers, or relaxed "we will get there eventually" small towners, mixed in with a good number of people who try doing work while driving their car. Noone knows how to drive with each other on the road. One friend saw someone reading architectural blueprints while driving.

parading their STUPIDITY... and lack of common sense..

i used to work in arlington and had to cross colombia tpke... i woudl stand at the light and laugh my ass off watching people ram into each other because they didn’t allow for the increased stopping distance... unbelievable...

so they will take a week off with pay due to snow....
taxpayer gets it up the wazoo as USUAL.....

Don’t know how many times I’ve seen folks driving with a bagel in one hand, coffee in the other.

You guys don’t understand. No roads were treated in the DC metro area. The snow fell and turned into a sheet of ice during rush hour. I witnessed drivers on I 66 literally stopped at the top of inclines and taking turns on out of control skids to get to the bottom. It took some people 8 hours to get home.

As was said upthread, snow in the South often begins as sleet or heavy wet flakes. Then the temp drops and the slush freezes solid.

It can be dealt with but going TOO slow is as bad as going too fast. And being able to have some distance between cars helps. Of course, once traffic stalls, it’s all over.

An inch of snow over a wet/icy asphalt base is something you have obviously never dealt with, or have forgotten about.

Chains, studs, 4 wheel drive AND ice tires are of little help when trying to control your car under those conditions.

We have lots of overpasses in our area of Texas and they do tend to get slick when the temps are below 40 and we have some moisture. It’s a real hoot to watch people drive over them. They go 70 mph until they come to the overpass, slam on their brakes, creep over the interchange area and then when at the end hit the gas and go barreling on down the road. Most drivers down here would never make it if we had real winter weather.

The storm has shifted east and south, with Charlotte now looking at 8 to 10 inches of snow, mixed with sleet and ice. I’ll take a foot of snow over an inch of ice any day. Even a half inch of ice means widespread power outages and heavy tree damage, not to mention the driving conditions. I’m two hours north and looking at over a foot myself now.

Ah,sure you would.

My DIL is a better snow driver than I am and she grew up in Hawaii.

Ok. Fair enough. That’s not something that most cities could deal with.

NOPE...had to laugh today when Levin got caught about his finance’s son working in Ted Cruz camp....

Wonder how long before we find out about Rush and what he’s been doing....

Amazing what you find when a person who is a ‘real leader’ can pull back the curtains and find out how really crooked people are....

Yeah, there’s no excuse not to have salt on hand. That’s just ridiculous. Typical of D.C. to avoid preventative action.
