Guest workers in United States earn less than the average U.S. wage for the same job, and there's little evidence of a labor shortage in the fields where they are employed, a study contends.

Thank goodness for these studies! Because I never would have guessed that result otherwise.

The study looked at unskilled and semi-skilled occupations only. The greatest pay differential was with janitorial supervisors ($8.94), and the least was with waiters/waitresses ($0.11).

I’m confused - how could they compare the guest workers to American workers in the same job? After all, we’ve been told for years that they’re doing the jobs that Americans won’t do.

A simple way to kill the guest worker program(s) is to implement a tax on the company that hires foreign workers, so that it raises the cost of the job to median +10%

Be interesting to see the numbers for the degreed professionals who are foreign guest workers.

Now it seems that being able to speak Vietnamese, Chinese, and Hindi are requirements to advance stateside in the tech sector. “Oh, I’m so sorry, we need someone fully capable of speaking with our offshore solutions team.”

The selling point “only doing the job the American labor force won’t do” is false when one considers the “dreamers” who are here illegally who want to receive instate tuition (denied to US citizens from the other 49 stats) to go to college to get a degree and a professional career.

I have a friend who’s only available job is consulting training Foreign H1b workers to learn programming.

He says there are lots of people in the USA that are experienced STEM workers.

My friend hasn’t had a full time job in 4 years, he was a boss of a 30 person programming dept. He has a BA and 2 Masters, one in Business the other in Computer science.

This is of course a big lie by the Cheap Labor Express.

Why else would they be bringing programmers here to have my friend train them, instead of hiring or training Americans?

I think the Cheap labor express are traitors not hiring Americans first.

Well, no s***-the construction/remodel crew I work on/with is starving for work because companies from the city hire green cards and so can underbid us, even out here in BFE-the dude ranches and other tourist traps hire them, too, even though here just about all of us are willing to clean rooms, cut grass, muck out stables and work in a kitchen-you know-do those jobs Americans supposedly won’t do...

Ironically, that is exactly the method they employ in Japan. As a result, the wage level of the industry is raised and more locals are attracted into the field.

The foreigners thus employed are fewer and grateful to their host country for the opportunity, rather than p*$$ed off about being exploited. I know this because I was such a worker in Japan for 14 years.

Received couple of calls during the Christmas holidays from a guy who has all sorts of crews he can put together. I have often used one of their handmen for small jobs. They are all Black guys, great workers and do an excellent job. Only alternative I’ve found for the Mexicans in our area which I refuse to use, regardless of the cost differential. He said they are desperate for work. Lord knows there is plenty of work around and being done but too many people put cheap $ ahead of quality and U.S. citzens. Have lots of things that need doing but not the money to have them done. Hopefully they’ll still be available when I have some extra money.

Both myself and one of my co-workers get an indignant response sometimes when we tell people we don’t let green cards-and certainly not illegals-work for/with us, ever. Since we are both of Hispanic ancestry, maybe they think we all are supposed to think alike-which I find insulting.

Our compadre and contractor we worked for died suddenly after he had apparently beaten cancer-from a bad reaction to chemotherapy-in mid-summer, too-my 3 coworkers and I have said we don’t see any extra money in our future-I really hope we are wrong-but it would take a huge economic comeback to bring that about-one big enough to give the snowbirds income enough to come here and stay for the winters again, filling up the dude ranches, RV parks, cabins, etc, putting money for the services we provide in the pockets of the owners of those businesses so they can hire us-we can only hope...
