When I was in the first grade around 1953 we got to visit there. We even got to go aboard a ship. There were sailors there and I even got to sit in the seat of what I thought was a huge cannon.
I now know it must have been a 40mm anti aircraft gun. One sailor showed us three round clips of the ammo. The one thing which impressed me is how easy it was to spin the gun around. Almost effortless.
Several months ago some divers from there came to DeFuniak Springs and photographed the bottom of Lake DeFuniak. It has a diameter of just about exactly a mile. They were hoping to find the source of the lake’s water.
I never did hear if they did.
