The standard political rules don't apply to Donald Trump.
We have seen him get through controversy after controversy that would have instantly ended the campaign of a traditional candidate and not only has he remained virtually unscathed but his poll numbers have actually increased.
Trump has struck a nerve in this country and capitalized on what is perhaps the most perfect window for him to run in thanks to the fact that people are more divided than ever and extremely frustrated with the establishment and status quo in both parties.
A recent poll from NBC and the Wall Street Journal puts into perspective just how convincing Trump's message has been.
From The Washington Post:
Donald Trump, as I tell anyone who asks, defies virtually every political rule I thought I knew. There's no better encapsulation of Trump's up-is-down-and-down-is-up effect on presidential politics than a new number from the just-released NBC/Wall Street Journal poll. The question asked is a simple one: Could you see yourself supporting [fill in the blank candidate] for the Republican nomination for president? When NBC/WSJ first asked GOP voters that question about Trump last March, fewer than one in four (23 percent) said they could see themselves voting for him.
Wow.
That's pretty remarkable when you consider everything that has happened over the last year.
The media has been bashing Trump left and right for everything he says. Celebrities have been freaking out calling him racist and threatening to leave the country if he wins. But yet, here he is with a significant amount of support that only continues to grow.

He can’t. It is a straw man Cruz constructed so he could mercilessly beat it up.
I don’t know about them, but I can tell you what I would do if I were in that position.
All officers of government in this country, in every branch, at every level, have as the first obligation of their sacred oath the protection of all innocent lives within their jurisdiction.
If I were elected to the office of President of the United States, I would keep my oath.
Justice Blackmun, in Roe vs. Wade, admitted that “of course” the child in the womb is protected by the Fourteenth Amendment, if they are a person.
Since it is self-evident that they are a person, my first act as President, after having sworn the oath, would be to publish a presidential finding to that effect.
My second act would be to ask for the resignation of anyone in the executive branch who would not act accordingly.
My third act would be to order the closing of every abortion facility in the country, as per the explicit, imperative requirement of the Supreme Law of the Land.
“No person shall be deprived of life without due process of law.”
“No State shall deprive any person of life without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”
That’s the platform I ran on in 2012.

I turned out Levin years ago...I was listening to Hannity and shut him down...don’t listen to Rush anymore either, and certainly not the ‘Cult’ Beck....
And when the local news is on, I’m yelling at the T.V. so I just read different new article on the internet...
At least I listened to and studied Trump for months and concluded that he is entertaining, not conservative, is a phony, and a real jackass. Me, I am a constitutional conservative that has sworn to never again vote for another liberal. I have enough miles on me and knowledge to see through Trump’s pompous arrogant rhetoric. Count me out of the cult.
Yes, you are correct. Thanks!
I still love Levin been listening since 2006, if Rush ever pulls his head out of his arse maybe he can promote the conservative in the race and not a NY liberal charlatan that was palling around with the Clintons, Schummer, Pelosi, Bloomberg and Reid until recently.
‘Because the original interpretation of “natural born citizen” meant an individual born in the US to two US citizens who had also been born in the US.’
You are mistaken. The original interpretation of NBC was a person born in the USA to two CITIZEN parents.
For full disclosure: I taught US government for over 30 years.
I am not qualified to label anyone a “birther”. I do know that the original (NOT current, that’s clearly in dispute with multiple interpretations) requirement for natural born citizenship included birth within the US and two natural born citizen parents.
The Constitutional requirement to be a natural born citizen applies solely to the office of President of the US.
Grandparents’ or earlier ancestors’ citizenship was/is irrelevant.

Up until the last debate I was willing to say that if Trump wins the nomination, I will vote for Trump vs Hillary.I hate to burst your little bubble but the truth is, most people don't really care what you're willing to say let alone what you do.I have firmly changed my mind....
Takes one to know one, does it not?
Look, just because a significant number of people (and by no means are you all Republicans either) decide in your wisdom to vote for someone who has a clear liberal history is no reason for the rest of us to behave like a bunch of lemmings and follow you all over the cliff.
If it’s Trump vs. either Hillary or Bernie, mark my words there will be a viable third party option, and a hell of a lot of us (both Dems and Republicans) will end up voting for that third option.
You want to choose between two NY libs, you go right ahead.

‘It is a straw man Cruz constructed so he could mercilessly beat it up.’
Agree. But it actually appears to be a strawman Cruz constructed so as to entirely unnecessarily drag Trump’s mother into it. A low move.
poor Cruz. No wonder my liberal friends think his supporters are insane. They truly are.

>>>If Trump wins the nomination, I will write in Ted Cruz on my ballot<<<
And what would that accomplish except helping the DemoncRats continue their destruction of America?
Do you really think that Trump would be worse than Hillary or Bernie, really?
I know, I know, Romney would have been much worse than Obama, blah blah blah. Do I really need a Sarc Tag?
I’m a Cruz guy first with Trump as my second and only other choice. The other so called contenders are Non Applicable.
I would Vote for Trump if Cruz doesn’t make it, no doubt.
‘Nope.... go back and listen to what Cruz said. He said that some birthers argue that.
I have seen some birthers right here on FR argue that.’
You never saw this bc it never happened. It’s absurd on its face.
I’m usually in the car around 6 PM so Levin makes sense. But he’s off until Iowa. I’ll give him another chance then.
