What to make of Senator Ted Cruz? He is a very, very smart man who apparently believes that the median Republican presidential primary voter is very, very dumb. Thereâs some evidence for that proposition â Donald Trump still leads in the national polls â but Cruzâs strategy rests on the proposition that these voters will enjoy being condescended to. He may very well have chosen the most effective strategy. Senator Cruz is very much hardwired into the current us-and-them mood of the electorate, Right and Left, and though he is a creature of Princeton and Harvard Law whose household long has been sustained by a Goldman Sachs paycheck, Cruz is keenly interested in giving the impression that there exists a vast cultural chasm between himself, the champion of what some populists like to call âthe Real Americaâ â as though Ronald Reagan of Hollywood, J. P. Morgan of Wall Street, and Bill Gates of Harvard werenât real Americans â and the wicked Washington-based elite. Cruz is an outsider to the extent that a member of an Ivy League eating club (have someone explain it to you) who went on to be a member of the nationâs most prestigious lunch club, the Senate, can be an outsider. He is a Texan, albeit a Texan from the anodyne suburbs of Houston, which could be the suburbs of anywhere. He didnât grow up baling hay in Muleshoe.

RE: So, even though every person in the remaining 49 states KNEW he meant NYC, he pissed off an entire state who are New Yorkers.
From one New Yorker to another, and from one who lives NEAR the city ( Nassau County, Long Island ), I immediately KNEW what Cruz was referring to.
I was in upstate New York 2 days after Cruz used those words and those hard working folks out there UNDERSTOOD what Cruz was referring to.
If you’re a conservative, how could you not?
I did concede that after a while non-NYCers “got it”. I only said that the immediate gut reaction in hearing “New York” was not good for him. Sheesh.
Cruz us right about NY, the Governor has flat out said conservative are not welcome their. Having said that I am still for Trump.
RE: You can spin it anyway that you like but NY and NYC are firmly Socialist and Communist and there are “Conservatives” defending them
Disagree. Is it not possible to hijack the term “conservative”?
Heck we see it even in the GOPe, so why not.
Your above statement ASSUMES that there are no true conservatives in this state ( I live here ). Trump referred to one — Bill Buckley ( but that was a straw man as Cruz was not talking about men like him ).
There are still MANY conservatives ( as opposed to your “conservatives” ) who live in New York and the tri-state area.
There are quite a number. Not large enough to make a difference but large enough to contribute money for a true conservative to get his message across.
These are just taking points. The Canadian thing is settled law. Try looking up the naturalization act of 1790. Here’s a hint, “the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond Sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural-born Citizens”
And you thinking Trump or anyone could win all fifty states is ridiculous. That tells me you’re not serious and deluding yourself into thinking Trump is much more than he is, likely whatever you want him to be.
Winning the presidency is about attracting the middle. Cruz was never going to win NYC in any case. It remains to be seen if he attracted more voters than he allegedly alienated.
As Todd said: “Duck Dynasty values vs Bill de Blasio values.”
Trump will win New Hampshire and South Carolina.
Would you like to make a wager on some or all of those predictions? I would take the negative bet on all except a stand-alone "Trump will win NY in the primary."
Cruz has a small chance to win in Iowa, but Trump will win New Hampshire and South Carolina. Trump nationally leads by almost 30 points. He is higher than Ronald Reagan at this time.
I have a little inside baseball for all my friends who are not from the Great State of New York.
New York State residents think New York City is a cesspool with Leftist/Socialist politicians who end up controlling Albany (our capital). We think of New York City as the wee little tail that wags the whole state.
In fact, we hate New York City so much, we wanted to be able to secede from Manhattan entirely and create the 51st State. In 2013, when a survey was going around to vote on this secession, I wrote a column called âFree New Yorkâ (which is now available in my first collection of columns RANT: Politics & Snark in the Age of Obama) in which I wrote:
excellent post.
a lot of Trumpsters have driven me crazy trying to change my vote.
to no avail.
it took Ted one sentence to flip me to Trump.
i know a bunch of FReeper who will be happy about it.
someone posted that 9/11 has nothing to do with values?
one friend dead of lung cancer, another dying, cleaning up the pit, as they called it.
if i was a fireman and saw a 110 story building in a lot of trouble, i’d say “i quit”. well, i hope i wouldn’t.
lines for giving blood were out the door. people helping people like never before.
fighting to keep the CROSS SHAPED SURVIVING BEAM UP AND WE WON.
men who wouldn’t go home from their job even when ordered to.
Giuliani was elected by these people without principles.
and though he is not liked on this board, he was a Good man and a GREAT mayor.
he would have beaten obama and he wouldn’t have touched guns at the federal level, and was against gay marriage and abortion.
what are the rest of the country’s values that are so much better/
calling Cuomo, who i HATED his politics, calling him a DAGO and a WOP on the thread when he died. what value is that? I’m a WOP too, by the way.
a number of posts sent to me drooling with hatred of Catholics, saying we are the reason dems win the WH, which is nonsense. if not for hispanic catholics, it would be a landslide for republicans
and other groups, like Jews and Asians, vote Overwhelmingly democrat, but i’ve never seen vitriol thrown at them.
Nor should there be.
I have many Jewish friends in NYC who are insanely liberal and hypocrites. one says he is a communist but sends his kids to a private catholic school and did TONS of overtime for more money. He said country folk were dumb.
but he was a GOOD guy to me. Taught me what would become my profession, graphics. Patient as hell, when i should have been let go because my experience level was FAR BELOW what was required. The man gave me my career,
Yaron, we didn’t become friends until i was 33, when we met, yet he has been a BETTER friend than ones i’ve had my whole life. His parents treat me like a son. Though he was moderately conservative. My middle class Jewish friends are much more moderate than my wealthy Jewish friends. I think that may be true for most groups.
all different people in all different groups have all different values and no group is perfect.
I’m Italian American, Roman Catholic, have liberal friends even though I want to clock them many times and we argue about politics any time it comes up.
when i got sick, ALL of them visited me at my home. I got money and gift certificates galore.
I abhor their political views, and think they are terribly misguided and being pro abortion disgusts me, but i present my arguments on the issues and have won some battles and maybe changed a few voter’s minds.
and MANY have told me they respect me for not changing my views to fit with the group. in an office of maybe 50 or 60, there was me and one libertarian, everyone else liberal dem.
the hypocrisy of working at an investment bank and being ultra liberal!!
BUT I WILL NOT APOLOGIZE FOR NEW YORK!!!!!
I LOVE THE CITY. ESPECIALLY LATE AT NIGHT WHEN YOU HAVE THE BUILDINGS AND STREETS ALL TO YOURSELF.
but that’s just me.
excellent post.
a lot of Trumpsters have driven me crazy trying to change my vote.
to no avail.
it took Ted one sentence to flip me to Trump.
You love your own post? Did you forget to sign on with your 2nd FR handle? Man you Trumpeters ARE desperate!
It should be okay to sneer at NY. And the People’s Democratic Republics of California and Massachusetts.
It isn’t like we are ever going to get electoral votes from them.
i sent it to myself!!!??? what a dope.
come on man, you dont say one state has better values than another.
it’s so incredibly divisive.
my one vote wont make or break either guy.
It was truthful. People are fleeing NY. Don't try to cheer-lead me, I live here.
bro, i dont care what you think. you’re a grown man.
but i think differently.
i dont even know what cheerleading you means.
it seems that many on this board look for trolls and trickstres in every post.
that’s sad.
i’m staying on Staten Island.
yes, i’ve bashed the city a number of times. But its MY city.
dont like out of towners bashing it.
have a good one man and sorry if i offended you.
Thank you for your post. Thank you for sharing your story and telling it like it is. I will not lie down while my friends and families are slandered or damned by innuendo.
Pissed off or not, they voted for Ted over The Donald in their straw poll, AFTER he made the statement. The only people pissed off are libs and RINO’s.
Thank you. I NEEDED that. getting slammed for my posts on this issue!!!
