Did Trump walk into a trap on “NY Values” fight?
Legal Insurrection ^ | 1/15/16 | William A. Jacobson

The exchange between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump on “NY values” was one of the highlights of last night’s debate.

While Cruz clearly was referring to liberalism, he used a phrase that left him open to Trump’s counterattack invoking 9/11:

he media is thrilled with Trump’s response. Of course, much of that media is in or from NY City. I expressed last night that I wasn’t sure that the issue would play in Trump’s favor outside NY.

I was born in NYC, spent my early childhood there, grew up in and returned to the NYC suburbs after law school until moving to Rhode Island in 1993. And since 2008 have lived (originally part time now full time) in Ithaca.

I understand what Cruz was referring to. And it has nothing to do with knocking the heroism of NY police and firemen, or how New Yorkers reacted under attack. It has everything to do with political, economic and social outlooks which are not accepted in the Republican Party in general much less among conservatives.

The Cruz campaign apparently thinks this is a fight it needs to have, via Washington Examiner:

TBBT: Ummm no....Cruz had some moments, but he’s not in Trump’s league...Cruz is playing to a narrow base, Trump is playing to the American people. Ted stepped in it big time last night. If by some stroke of good fortune he wins the nomination, Hillary will beat him with his values comments mercilessly and marginalize him into the narrow section of the country that he is running in. He will be lucky to win some of the Southern states and maybe the Plains states.

Not from Pelham NY. ‘Pelham’ was Jeb Stuart’s artillery officer.

Cruz was saying something reminiscent of Barry Goldwater who said “sometimes I think this country would be better off if we could just saw off the Eastern Seaboard and let it float out to sea”. Both were taking a swipe at the liberalism of the region.

And while it’s amusing for those of us outside of the area it’s not going to sit well with those of you residing inside the borders of Occupied America. I’m for Trump but I wouldn’t take this as any big deal. Cruz is just looking for some way to peel off voters in Iowa.

I like many things about Trump, but it is really rich to hear him accuse others of being insulting

Ain't it the truth. Like most loud mouth bullies, he can dish it out, but whines when it comes back at him.

If this is a strategy, he should be night manager of a Denny’s instead of a senator.

Cruz is going to be in the race until the end. I knew exactly what he meant about NYorkers because I remembered the interview between Tim and Donald. (I guess I must be old-lol). During this last debate, Donald made himself look like the blowhard that he is. He should have known better than try to spar off with Cruz.

One side claims Cruz screwed up and the other says Donald stepped in it. Only the polls will tell the truth.

“No, it was Cruz who walked into a pile of doggie doo doo.”

I humbly disagree and say it was strategy. Cruz did 3 things. 1) He got Trump to admit he is a New Yorker. 2) Cruz got to restate his point and to blame the neo libs. 3) Cruz got the NY Press all wee wee’d up and the Daily News front page confirmed Cruz’s position.

Cruz is thew smartest man in the room for a reason. How come all of a sudden people think he just fell off the turnip truck? No knock on Trump, but Cruz is probably in the top 5% of legal scholars in this country so he probably knows whether he is qualified to be President.

Something else Trump did. By harping on Cruz’s eligibility, it would be impossible to now make him your VP. That’s called a flip flop and Hillary and the media will jump on that. Which means, he will lose the purist conservative vote. And with libs voting for the Democrat candidate anyway, Trump can kiss this election goodbye, regardless of his lead.

“They say Trump is not a politician. I beg to differ.”

As an amateur politician he is an extremely fast learner. And I’m sure that he polished the skills that he’s using in his years in business and on television.

“Did you ask them?

No? Ok then.”

How would you know whether or not I have asked ‘them’?

I have travelled the country extensively. Opinions of New York city residents are not good, even in Northern New York state.

Thank your for your comments. ;-)
