The exchange between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump on âNY valuesâ was one of the highlights of last nightâs debate.
While Cruz clearly was referring to liberalism, he used a phrase that left him open to Trumpâs counterattack invoking 9/11:
he media is thrilled with Trumpâs response. Of course, much of that media is in or from NY City. I expressed last night that I wasnât sure that the issue would play in Trumpâs favor outside NY.
I was born in NYC, spent my early childhood there, grew up in and returned to the NYC suburbs after law school until moving to Rhode Island in 1993. And since 2008 have lived (originally part time now full time) in Ithaca.
I understand what Cruz was referring to. And it has nothing to do with knocking the heroism of NY police and firemen, or how New Yorkers reacted under attack. It has everything to do with political, economic and social outlooks which are not accepted in the Republican Party in general much less among conservatives.
The Cruz campaign apparently thinks this is a fight it needs to have, via Washington Examiner:

nope
Ahhhh, no.
Trying to turn a lemon into lemonade. That dog won’t hunt. You can’t unring a bell.
No, it was Cruz who walked into a pile of doggie doo doo.
No, because the rest of the country knows exactly what Cruz meant about “New York values”. Even Northern New Yorkers know about the attitudes of the people in New York City.
I think everyone understood what Cruz meant. Trump’s clever rhetorical trick was to interpret ‘NY Values’ differently in order to turn it to his advantage.
Have the Pro-Cruz brigades taken over Free Republic? Wow. The Propaganda is almost relentless here.
I have to wonder if it’s all just some undercover RAT operation.
In fact, Ted Cruz is a no-name Senator with no record of accomplishing anything. He might appeal to hard-core conservatives who use some kind of check-list to pick their candidates, but he has no hope in the general election against Hillary.
To try and dislodge the man who’s leading him 2 to 1 is the RATS dream - and you people are doing your best to help them accomplish it. Congratulations.
New York is America's heart.
I know this because I lived there.
You have to have lived in New York to understand the truth of Cruz’s comment. I did and I understand. Nothing like the western US.
IMHO, this is being way over thought and over publicized.
Trump said that not a lot of evangelicals come from Cuba. Cruz countered with not a lot of conservatives come from New York.
Tempest in a teapot.
Strategy? Ted was clapping at the the end of Trumps response. Trap? LOL.
Everyone knows who Trump in and his background. Trump’s response will help him win NY in the general election.
Donald Trump is the NY values candidate. The early primaries are front-loaded with folks who do not look to kindly on NY liberalism or NY arrogance. Now Trump has forever associated himself with the crime and corruption liberal culture of NY. Trump should have admitted that NY values are liberal and he having lived all his life there knows how evil it is and having grown wiser in his advanced years he hates NY values but loves the people... Blah blah blah. Cruz will benefit on the this more than Trump with all his faux rage and NY’ers obnoxious vitriol.
BOOM! Trump sees everything. BOOM! He can’t be set up. BOOM!
BOOM!
And it worked.
They say Trump is not a politician. I beg to differ.
You’re right, once a Manhattan liberal, always a Manhattan liberal. Obama wins Trumps place of abode by 93-6. And then Trump politicizes 9/11 along with the commie Mayor and Governor. Somehow I don’t think that will accrue to Trumps benefit in the long run. But who knows.
I like many things about Trump, but it is really rich to hear him accuse others of being insulting.
