Did Trump walk into a trap on “NY Values” fight?
Legal Insurrection ^ | 1/15/16 | William A. Jacobson

The exchange between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump on “NY values” was one of the highlights of last night’s debate.

While Cruz clearly was referring to liberalism, he used a phrase that left him open to Trump’s counterattack invoking 9/11:

he media is thrilled with Trump’s response. Of course, much of that media is in or from NY City. I expressed last night that I wasn’t sure that the issue would play in Trump’s favor outside NY.

I was born in NYC, spent my early childhood there, grew up in and returned to the NYC suburbs after law school until moving to Rhode Island in 1993. And since 2008 have lived (originally part time now full time) in Ithaca.

I understand what Cruz was referring to. And it has nothing to do with knocking the heroism of NY police and firemen, or how New Yorkers reacted under attack. It has everything to do with political, economic and social outlooks which are not accepted in the Republican Party in general much less among conservatives.

The Cruz campaign apparently thinks this is a fight it needs to have, via Washington Examiner:

America's heart...why, I have to admit, I found that quite touching. So much so that I had to wipe away a tear.

*sob*

"America's heart" in action...

Here’s the thing.

Trump, delusional or not, wants to win New York in the general and that’s his home state so he has to defend it.

By the way, you have to be very more stubborn to be a conservative in a heavily blue state than a red state.

“Predicting sets up oneself for ridicule.”

Indeed. Though there seems to be a special exemption for the “journalist” class about that. Those bozos go on the air night after night and make such predictions with the certainty that they know for a fact the “pulse of the nation”, and they can be wrong 99% of the time and still go on the air the next night and continue being paid big bucks to be wrong over and over AGAIN.

No other professional could survive being wrong that often. So, I guess if one wants to be wrong and keep their job even if one is wrong all the time, they should go into a “wrong-proof” career like “journalism”.

Love him or hate him, Trump thinks big. Last time Republican candidate won New York was 1984. Trump is going for a map like this. If he can do it we transform America again!

Last time we saw a map like this was before the 1986 Reagan amnesty deal.

I actually love that he thinks big....it’s among the things I do like. What I don’t like are his small minded bot supporters (not accusing you of that).

here’s the thing.

you don’t win NY as a Republican by agreeing with NY values. And you damned sure do not win the country that way. He’s steering left of RINOism....which is where he’s spent most of his adult life anyway.

That’s a bit obtuse, but I suspect you are like many—committed to a candidate and that’s all that matters.

Then you really aren't nearly as smart as I used to think you were....it would be hard to cram more ridiculous words into a single sentence than you did above. You can't handle the truth - because it is you obsessed with a candidate and not reality.

Reagan did not win New York by insulting their values and neither will any Republican. Trump is running on immigration, national security and trade issues. It is a targeted campaign.

All I am saying is that Trump is smart enough to not make enemies cheaply. Repubs should be taking notes on how to win elections from Trump. Breitbart would be proud.

I want to win this election. Sick of hearing artificial rules about how to do it. We just need to do it. There is no rule book or referee to stop the fight against the Dems. Republicans need to grow a pair or we will lose our country.

not a single vote....NOT A SINGLE VOTE...that has any chance of going Republican is upset. This is all contrived weenieness.....like a bunch of liberals looking for a reason to be insulted.

Oh, wait....bunch of liberals. THATS IT.

I am talking about the General Election, not the primary and you know it. I agree that the NY Repubs will vote Trump in the general but I think he has a shot with some Dem voters that just plain don’t like Hillary (if she is the nom) and those are the votes he would need.

As far as rules, go George Washington crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night.

How dare he?

Grow up

This is about winning in November with a reasonable candidate. I’m not obsessed with any vision of perfection.

Yes, his narrow interpretation calls to mind the ethos of 9/11 response, a clever trick to place blinders on the people and hide the broader meaning of “New York values”.

It was a slick rhetorical trick. I’m surprised that Cruz didn’t have quick response to it. But maybe Cruz figured that any attempt to swat down Trump’s ploy would just play into Trump’s hand at that point. It obviously doesn’t pay to underestimate Trump’s ability.
