Democratic presidential candidate former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton argued that she is privileged, and “it is hard, when you’re swimming in the ocean to know exactly what’s happening around you†when asked about white privilege at Iowa Brown and Black Forum broadcast on Fusion on Monday.
Hillary, in response to a question on what “white privilege†means to her, and whether she has benefited from it, said “it is hard, when you’re swimming in the ocean to know exactly what’s happening around you, so much as it is when you’re standing on the shore, perhaps watching.â€
Hillary added that she went to good schools, and had a “strong, supportive families,†and “never really knew what was or wasn’t part of the privilege. I just knew that I was a lucky person.â€
She further stated that she realized she was privileged when she was around 11-years-old, and she volunteered to babysit the children of migrant workers.

I thought “white privilege” was bunk until someone on DU explained in a way that made sense (I’m serious). White children on average have the advantages of
* 2 parents
* parents who read to them at young ages
* parents who care how they do at school
* parents with a work ethic
* ... about 10 other advantages white children have based on parent not skin color
The DU member didn’t talk about Asians or first/second generation “African-Americans” but I agree with regard to a certain set of non-whites. Of course their solution was different than mine. I’d focus on “parents”. They wanted more money for teachers/baby-sitters to perform the role of parent.
Is she saying a WHITE shark would be considered privileged??
