She says this because she believes as a middle-class white woman, she's shielded from her city's criminal element but, in her opinion, she's not protected from her neighbors' legally-purchased weapons.

So we can assume she has not robbed or raped yet. The ghouls that will eventually do to this city dweller won't care that she edits some puke city newspaper. They'll call her a white bitch and have whatever way they want with her. And those city cops who she think 'protects' her will be minutes away when those seconds REALLY counted. God forbid some gun wielding neighbor should help her.....

These people really do live in a separate (mental) world, a world that they truly believe is safe and secure for them.
Then there is the real world; the world where the barbarians are at the gates and the police or the good guys are just outnumbered and overwhelmed.
She should try thinking about the fact that even good people, in good places, can be overwhelmed and harmed.
I will always choose to protect my loved ones and myself by being prepared to do battle if necessary; I still might lose, but not from lack of trying.
The police are there to capture the criminals after the crime has been committed, not necessarily to prevent the crime.
Even princes, kings, and presidents have been assassinated; I doubt her security is anywhere near as good as theirs.
