Is it unfair to put a question mark in that headline? Cruz fans will say, "What's so surprising about it?!"
But look, it is surprising. A politician's favorable rating is typically treated as a measure of his personal likability, and Cruz is not known as a guy to whom people easily take a shine the way they do to, say, Ben Carson or Marco Rubio.
Cruz is aware of this too, cleverly joking at the CNBC debate on October 29th that he might not be the candidate you'd most like to have a beer with but he'll get you home safe if you let him be your designated driver.
His endless grandstanding can be off putting even to people who agree with him on policy up and down the line. People who don't agree with him on policy, from the left all the way over to centrists in the GOP, tend to treat his name as a curse word.
The 2013 effort to defund ObamaCare and ensuing shutdown continues to look more like an early campaign commercial for Cruz than a fully baked strategy to accomplish the stated goal. He can be hard to like, but that only makes these numbers more impressive.
It takes an unusually deft politician to overcome a likability problem so thoroughly that he's topping even a candidate with easy charm like Rubio on a metric like this.
Rich Lowry has a smart piece out this week arguing that, for all the hype, Cruz is less a rigid ideologue like Barry Goldwater than he is a shrewd if personally awkward maneuverer like Richard Nixon. There's something to that...snip.

The article points out that Rubio's favorables plummetted, and that's because he tried to lie about Ted--- people aren't dumb... they know when someone's lying.
WooHoo! GO TED GO!
Buckle up. Fire incoming!
Okay, I get the Carson likability. I even understand why Cruz can be a little hard to take, though with the firming up on his immigration position he has become my first choice, with the Trump/Cruz ticket my second choice.
But I just can’t understand at all the concept of Rubio’s “likability”. He’s a conniving little (pro-amnesty) twerp, as far as I can see.
You have an Anita Hill disorder. Get help soon.
I posted this on the trumpee joy joy thread earlier. So proud of him. Can’t remember think bush bottom and trump one point above him.
trump with high people who would never vote for him.
Norm- you’ve been around I take it— what’s up with the board?? I hear C. Edmund got the zot.... any truth to that?
Because it is a GOPDNC/Media creation. Very few of us ever met a person that likes Rubio. We are countrywide, rural and urban. FR is an American crossection.
They lie.
Might have. He hated Trump and was VERY vocal about it. He’s probably one of the only people that is as hated here as me ;)
Hi joy, working, quick pass through. Keep up the good work.
Awesome Teddy. We knew if we loved him others did too. Just not here where trumpees have become left wing Alinskyites to honor their child leader.
Something’s happening, here.
Thanks! Your post reminds me of another article that needs to be posted. :)
Rubio? Likeability?
One look at him and I knew he wasn’t someone from whom I’d buy a used car.

Okay, so Cruz has the highest favorable rating among Republicans, but how many peopl who normally don’t vote are registering so they can vote for Trump?
All these people like Rich Lowry calling Goldwater “ a rigid idealogue” are too young to have any idea of what Goldwater was like. I barely remember remember him myself and I was in junior high when he ran. Maybe he was an idealogue in the sense he wanted people to think, but he wasn’t rigid. And anyone who thinks Trump, George W. Bush or even Ronald Reagan had to run against the media, has no concept compared to what Goldwater dealt with, plus the eastern Republican establishment. http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=25973
It’s really tragic he stewed his brain in alcohol and lost his life’s companion late in his career and stumbled on in confusion, so that is how many younger people remember him.
Can’t disagree with that.
Bashing Trump supporters doesn’t do anyone any good.
Rude Trump or Cruz supporters, however, should be criticized.
>> Cruz is not known as a guy to whom people easily take a shine
Just until they get to know him.
It’s media spin that he’s not likeable.
