NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. presidential candidates are spending long days on the campaign trail and their nights in a succession of budget hotels, often in small towns. Not Donald Trump.
After nearly every rally, the billionaire real estate developer hops into one of his planes or helicopters and returns to New York so that he can sleep in his own bed in his marble-and-gold-furnished Trump Tower apartment in Manhattan.
In November and December, Trump held six rallies in Iowa, visited a local production plant and held one town hall, flying home each night. His nearest rival for the Republican nomination, Ted Cruz, has zigzagged around the state, holding around a dozen town halls and twice as many "meet-and-greet" sessions, and bedding down between stops in hotels.
Trump's determination to sleep at home every night raises eyebrows among election campaign veterans, who say it could cost him. Voters in Iowa and New Hampshire often want more personal attention; they feel they play a special role in choosing presidential nominees because their contests are held first.
Trump leads in polls in New Hampshire but he has slipped behind Cruz in Iowa. Cruz has done what U.S. presidential candidates typically do: He has made the state a virtual second home in the run-up to Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucus.
This week Cruz is crisscrossing the state in a bus, cruising through small hamlets with stops at a pizza place, coffee house and even a water park.

“If thatâs true, why were you bragging that he met more people one on one than anybody?”
Because he has in a non status quo sense.
Why do you think traditional one-on-one has any meaning? That’s what this post seems to imply “itâs to criticize him because insisting on doing so is costing him not meeting as many voter one-on-one.”
I reject the idea that Trump is losing voters because he is “not meeting as many voter one-on-one”.
Trump’s rally crowds feel like they have met him one-on-one, even I do just watching the videos. I’m not sure exactly how trump manages that but his rallies are like a conversation in a living room. So somehow Trump has changed the meaning of one-on-one. It’s not like OMalley talking to the one guy one-on-one for an hour, who then said he wasn’t going to vote for him.
“Iâd like to know who the hell are these ‘campaign veterans’”
Probably the same campaign veterans that have written Trump’s obit many times over. . .
Still not the same.
.
You constantly dissemble.
Nothing in your post was in any way relevant to the fact that Don Trump used eminent domain to literally steal the ultimate value equity of properties from long time working class owners by buying off crooked local officials.
Trump is an immoral man. A man of low character.
.
You’re kidding, it’s still there?
That had to be almost 30 years ago.
They didn’t have inner spring mattresses.
We joked about the trucks that drove by; they all sounded like they were driving between the beds.
How dare him to do that on his own dime, he should be sticking the Taxpayer for this elegant arrangement, just like any other politician. Turns me of for sure.
Nice straw man.
Trump is using his empire for all it’s worth and it is resonating with average joe public.
I wanna be like THE DONALD campaign song

and set to clips of his campaign

“dynoman.” That must signify “spin.”
If your talking about the more recent Court ruling - the one that was decided BY THE LIBERALS on the Supreme Court and FOUGHT by Conservatives I see your point.
That said even if I totally disagree with what the liberals on the court did - IT IS THE LAW and people in that profession (real estate) will use the law.
I don’t know how we can get a Supreme Court ruling overturned with the Congress we have now - but it’s probably worth a try in the future.
.
More dissembling and misdirection added in.
My comments were not about eminent domain, they were about Trump’s baseness.
He is a low moral character plastic person.
.
She’s quite the stuffer.
It's not an attack. The point is that by travelling home so much, he doesn't spend as much time as the others meeting people in Iowa and NH.
I've always respected you editor, but we don't see eye to eye on this one.
Exactly. When was the last time Trump engaged in any retail politics? Met with voters at a local diner? Heck, met with voters anywhere?
So you feel Trump should be SMART like Bush, Carley, and Christie? People’s numbers that don’t add up to HALF of Trump’s numbers? Maybe Bush should start flying home every night...
.
Law does not define moral character; it is supposed to react to it.
That is an intelligent and profound response.
I'm not aware that he ever has, now that you mention it.
I've been involved in Iowa grassroots conservative politics for about 25 years, and I've never heard a peep from Trump or any of his people, ever.
