Real-estate mogul Donald Trump ended his Thursday-night campaign rally by calling for an end to so-called gun-free zones on schools and US military bases.
"I will get rid of gun-free zones on schools -- you have to-- and on military bases on my first day. It gets signed my first day," the Republican presidential front-runner told his supporters in Burlington, Vermont.
"You know what a gun-free zone is to a sicko?" Trump asked. "That's bait."
Trump's rally was occurring at the same time as US President Barack Obama's televised town-hall forum addressing gun violence. Obama has repeatedly called for gun-control measures after recent mass shootings and took executive action this week to expand background checks on gun buyers, among other things.
But Trump argues that more people need to be carrying arms to protect the innocent.
His allusion to gun-free military bases was apparently a reference to the attacks against two military installations in Chattanooga, Tennessee, last July. His gun-free schools comment could have been referring to the mass shooting at an Oregon community college last October, though concealed firearms were reportedly allowed there.

The Federal Government should tell local schools what their policies should be?
Most conservatives want smaller federal government in local issues and more local control.
Wouldn’t that take an act of Congress?
I can just imagine Trump having all of these orders lined up and spending the day signing off on them to great fanfare.
He couldn’t actually do that as President. But I think what he’s doing here is “signaling,” not actually stating a specific policy intent.
But I think what heâs doing here is “Pandering” not actually stating a specific policy intent.
He threw schools in with military bases, which he actually can change on day one. Schools are another story, but the more I watch Trump, the more I think that he meticulously plans these kinds of ‘off the cuff’ remarks. Now, everyone will be talking about this and debating it, having conversations that otherwise would have been avoided.
I agree. That is why we need to removed the federal law that creates gun fee zones at schools.
What federal law? I know there are some schools in Texas that are not gun free zones.
Texas school district arms teachers and posts warning signs

The Argyle Independent School District in north Texas has started the 2014-15 school year, as KDAF-TV noted, “with guns blazing” â or, rather, with newly armed teachers who have been given the right to use them “to protect our students.”
If there was an armed guard at Sandy Hook we probably never would have known the words Sandy Hook.
Almost as clueless as Zero on the subject.
So what is he claiming he would sign on his first day for this topic?
Iirc the law isn’t a mandate but an incentive.
Make your schools a “gun free zone” and you get some Federal money.
I do not believe there is any federal money tied as well. You would need to show a reference to support such a claim. It isn’t mentioned in the articles talking about Texas Schools arming.
Purge the military of the freaks, community organizers and social engineers day one also.
While his understanding of the baiting nature of such rules is correct, I fail to see how a law abiding President can abrogate duly enacted laws at multiple jurisdictional levels in a single day.
Can anyone enlighten me on how to do such a thing within the bounds of the constitution?
Good for Trump... he’s right on this issue.
Congress changes laws, not presidents.
There actually is a federal law, introduced by Biden and signed into law by W. It is the Gun Free Schools Act of 1994.
Unconstitutional law, in my opinion, but it exists, nonetheless. How Trump can “on day one” executive order himself around yet another law passed by Congress sounds like someone who doesn’t know much about the separation of powers.
