Authorities say they have arrested two people on terrorism-related charges in Texas and California.
Federal officials said 24-year-old Omar Faraj Al Hardan, a Palestinian born in Iraq, was arrested in Houston on Thursday.
According to the federal indictment, Al Hardan has been charged with three counts alleging that he attempted to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a designated foreign terrorist organization.
He is charged with one count each of attempting to provide material support to ISIL, procurement of citizenship or naturalization unlawfully and making false statements.
Federal authorities told NBC News that Al Hardan was allegedly trying to help get people in the U.S. to travel overseas and join a foreign terror organization.
There was no plot to carry out attacks in the U.S., one law enforcement official said. Another federal official said there was never any danger to people in the U.S.
Al Hardan is expected to appear in court Friday at 10 a.m. in Houston before U.S. Magistrate Judge John R. Froeschner. He entered the United States as a refugee on or about Nov. 2, 2009. He was granted legal permanent residence status on or about Aug. 22, 2011, and resides in Houston, according to the indictment.
Al Hardan's arrest came to light after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's office released the following statement Thursday: "I applaud the FBI for today's arrest of this dangerous subject. However, this is precisely why I called for a halt to refugees entering the U.S. from countries substantially controlled by terrorists," Gov. Greg Abbott said. "I once again urge the President to halt the resettlement of these refugees in the United States until there is an effective vetting process that will ensure refugees do not compromise the safety of Americans and Texans."
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said in a statement that the arrests may have prevented a terror-related event.
Meanwhile, a criminal complaint unsealed Thursday accuses a Sacramento man of traveling to Syria to fight alongside terrorist organizations and lying to investigators about it.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Sacramento says 23-year-old Aws Mohammed Younis Al-Jayab, an Iraqi citizen, was arrested Thursday morning in Sacramento. He is charged with making a false statement involving international terrorism.
Federal officials say a separate arrest in Milwaukee that grew out of the Sacramento investigation is not related to national security.
Threat Matrix.
A grateful refugee. Another Obama imported time bomb.
Uncalled for language.
It was an act of love.
I wonder on what basis he was given asylum.
Well vetted I suppose
Perhaps defenestration should be considered..
We just don’t understand their customs, its not their fault its our fault..they should be allowed to blow things up and rape women says liberal loons
I wonder on what basis he was given asylum.
Notice how quickly they parroted the “no danger to Americans” theme. As if they could know that.
Set a rabid dog loose and somebody’s gonna get bit.
Well vetted I suppose
Probably better than most.
Thanks Bitt.
I’ll bet they watched one too many anti-Islam videos on YouTube.. /s
From the Indictment-
The indictment further alleges that during an interview in October 2015, Al Hardan falsely represented that he had never received any type of weapons training, when he allegedly received automatic machine gun training.
Gee, automatic machine gun training, that's not dangerous to others is it? - Tom
He was merely training for the purposes of taking up deer hunting. Due to an unfortunate misunderstanding, he didn’t understand that deer hunting with machine guns is prohibited.
We should be more sensitive. It’s a mistake anyone could make.
Iraqi Refugee Arrested in Houston Terror Plot

Is an Iraqi Refugee anything like a Syrian Refugee?
Oh no....that Sacremento terrorist must have checked the No box when that crack immigration form asked if he was a terrorist! I’m sure most terrorists check the Yes box. Truly, our government is too pathetically stupid to survive.
poor thing he could have gotten a job at Houston ISD’s Arabic Immersion school.
