The U.S. aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman came about 1,500 yards from an Iranian rocket in the Strait of Hormuz last week, two U.S. military officials told NBC News on Tuesday.
As the Truman was transiting the strait, which connects the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf, Iranian Revolutionary Guards conducted a live-fire exercise right near the U.S. carrier Saturday, officials said.
A U.S. military official said an Iranian navy fast and short attack craft began conducting a live-fire exercise at the same time the carrier was nearing the end of the strait, firing off several unguided rockets. A French frigate, the U.S. destroyer USS Buckley and other commercial traffic were also in the area.
The official said the U.S. ships were in the "internationally recognized maritime traffic lane" at the time, not in any territorial waters, when the Iranian navy announced over maritime radio that it was about to conduct a live-fire exercise and asked other vessels to remain clear.
After the warning, the rockets were fired from a position about 1,500 yards off the carrier's starboard side and in a direction away from passing coalition and commercial ships and the traffic lane, the official said. The rockets were not fired at the Truman and other ships, only near them.
While the official said the Iranians were "clearly not" targeting ships, the action was "unnecessarily provocative and unsafe."
There were no direct communications between U.S. and Iranian navies.
Coalition forces continued transiting without any further incident, the official said, adding that the Truman is now in the Gulf and launching aircraft in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
Active Duty ping.
Oh, you wait until 0bama gets off of the golf course and hears about this.....boy, he'll show them! </LMAO>
Time to face some hard, disturbing facts. The Obama led US military was outmaneuvered in the Persian Gulf. China bitterly resents coercive US military, economic or diplomatic policies almost anywhere in Asia. It views Iran as a source of oil and gas and Iran’s seventy five million citizens as a market for its export oriented economy. China sold Iran state of the art, stealthy shore to ship missiles with American designed guidance systems. The Iranians fortified the Persian Gulf with those missiles. The big ,blue water ships of the US Navy despite their defensive systems, faced a debacle worse than Pearl Harbor in the shallow, narrow Persian Gulf. What’s more they also sold the Iranians long range ballistic missiles based in Iran and shot range mobile missiles positioned in Syria. Israel would have suffered a devastating counter attack against its cities and population centers if it had attacked Iran. China was the unseen hand that forced Obama willingly or unwillingly to disengage from the Persian Gulf.
Live fire exercises in the Strait of Hormuz.
What could go wrong ?
???
It sounds like the rocket was just hanging around, mid-air, and the carrier cruses to within 1500 yards.
How about this, Jim and Courtney...
Headline: Iranian navy idiots fire rockets when USS Harry S Truman is within 1500 yards.
.
Iran was obviously looking for US radar and other electronic warfare signatures. Russia will pay well for that data.
Need fast BBs Strait of Hormuz soonest.
Send Montana class ASAP.
On the first day on being sworn in as President, either Donald Trump or Ted Cruz must change the Rules of Engagement that forces our military to be vulnerable and ineffective.
Or refit the New Jersey with nuclear propulsion — and new ammunition for its 16” guns.
And upgraded ship to ship, ship to air, anti-sub and cruise missile capability.
She’ll take a licking and keep on ticking.
Have our idiot SecState and SecDef apologized to the Iranians yet? Obama expects this to be taken care of.
Lots more jobs building BB(N) 67-BB(N) 71.
In fact, going back up to 600 ships should fix a lot of problems.
That was NOT a close call in military terms. Now, a “close call” was the kind my son experienced as part of the 3rd Infantry Division column that was advancing up the left side of the Euphrates River in early April 2003.
He and some of his unit were watching our forces bombard the Iraqi Republican Guard tank divisions when an Iraqi missile landed about 1,000 feet away. They just stood there after it landed.
It was when another one landed 100 feet from them that they dove for the trenches. Now that was a “close call”.
I guess it is all just a major of perspective.
Tehran would have glowed in the dark.
Buy stock in the steel makers!
So if we attack Iran do we have to defend them under the rules John Kerry agreed to?
Reagan would have ensured we also had a live fire exercise back in their direction. Obama likely hid under the bed.
Do you know that when the USS Missouri was built in Brooklyn, the Navy was operating a steel mill near the Brooklyn Navy Yard?
Imagine the permits you would need to do that again!
