Well, isn't that "humane" of them.
Sometimes I think corporal punishment would do better for our society than jailing offenders.
But whipping, public or private, is not ever making a comeback in US law.
It’s not as severe as a Sharia caning or British Navy flogging of lore which I think inspired it in Singapore and Malaysia
But it stings and injures no question
The maximum caning in Singapore requires hospitalization afterwards

That’s for what we consider for severe crimes in addition to prison sentence
Years ago I had a conversation with missionaries who were home from Singapore. They were in favor of public lashings: everyone knows the consequence for breaking the law and it’s a very effective deterrent. Much more so than probation or jail. People choose to commit crimes and that is the consequence. It’s fair and there’s no permanent damage.
It goes without saying that sharia law is a whole different unjust system.
