SEATTLE - The general manager at a restaurant at Seattle's University Village is apologizing to a mother after one of its employees told a breastfeeding mother to cover up.
"There shouldn't be a stigma about breastfeeding," mother Lauren Hernandez said.
Hernandez was having lunch at Piatti Sunday afternoon.
She was with her 9-month-old son, Bob, who started getting fussy.
"While I was nursing him, the hostess came up to me and told me to cover up because people had complained," Hernandez said. "And I told her 'I think it's illegal for you to tell me to cover up' and she said 'No, we just had training on it.'"

Pumping does not work for every mom. Nursing a child is not an immodest act. Some nursing babies will not take a bottle. Besides why is it any of your concern how a mother decides to feed her baby? Unless the child is obviously suffering from neglect.
The child is 9 months old. Pediatricians recommend that infants be nursed or on formula for the first year of life. In many cultures nursing goes beyond one year. The child is probably on breast milk plus some solids. That is the norm for a child at this stage of development.
Yeah because feces is just like food.
So... I can take a dump in public and no one can say anything, right?
My wife breastfed all three of our children in public. No one ever knew, they just assumed the baby was sleeping.
“I told her ‘I think it’s illegal for you to tell me to cover up’.”
In other words, “I don’t care what every other customer wants. I demand the right to do what I want even if it offends everyone else.”
Another case of the Tyranny of One in our bizarro world. They should have tossed her onto the sidewalk when she refused.
When I had my son (2001), La Leche League had the talking point that breast feeding was recommended by the American Pediatric society (or whatever the correct name is), for at least one year. The World Health Organization recommended at least two full years.
The nerve cells need a lining of fat which continues to develop up to age five, I was told. This comes from the breast milk. If you are not breastfeeding up to that age (and who is?), you provide dairy fat from cow’s milk, and do not serve the baby non-fat.
Breastfed babies average 8 IQ points higher than formula-fed.
Our two kids are smart cookies, but the one who was still getting some feedings up to age 2 1/2 is not only very smart, but is also the most emotionally balanced and well-rounded person in our household. I think it is in part because his needs were fully met, early on.
threatening? hardly. approval.
if she wasn’t seeking attention, and approval, of her actions... she wouldn’t do it in public.
monkeys walk around with their young on their teats.
humans cover up when in public
My answer to this is I wish everyone in the place would just turn to her table and stare. I’d bet exhibitionist or not this would make her uncomfortable. She likely enjoys seeing the unease people around her have with her breastfeeding so kinda turn the tables and make her uncomfortable.
Really though I have seen women breastfeed in public in a way such that you didn’t even realize what they were doing. Sounds as if this case was not one of those cases and while I can personally deal with it, were I to have 5-6 year old kids its not the kind of thing I’d like them seeing so casually. Modesty still has a place in this society I’d hope.
That’s unsanitary and disrespectful of the next person who would (probably unknowingly) east at that table. I’d have said so.
It’s puzzling to me why men seem to get so upset about breastfeeding. It’s how babies eat.
These very same can men pass wind, scratch themselves and burp in public and think it’s okay. But a baby eating with none of the breast even showing they find gross. Strange.
In addition to what you said it was downright revolting. And the woman's smirk when she did it and the fact that she was well aware that she was putting on a performance kind of showed to me that she wanted some sort of confrontation.
On the plus side last month a woman in line in front of me seated her smelly diapered get on the counter at MacDonalds and they promptly told her to get the kid off the counter and that peoples' food was placed on the counter, so not every restaurant considers dirty diapers to be healthy additions to the food service environment.
Because it isn't as "in your face" that way.
mooo
Bring a cloth to drape over the babys head. The baby will appreciate it the most. Baby needs privacy (semi-privacy) too.
‘”There shouldn’t be a stigma about breastfeeding,” mother Lauren Hernandez said.’
Gee, what if I decide there shouldn’t be a stigma about farting in public? That’s a natural body function too. I doubt Mrs. Hernandez would agree that I should be free to flatulate near her while she is trying to eat at a restaurant.
Dude, I don’t want to see that fattie’s boobs while I’m trying to eat.
“I saw a smug “mom” change a #2 diaper right on the restaurant table.”
I’d have dropped a dime to the health inspector if the restaurant didn’t put a stop to that.
The second time was as I described earlier. Both of these women were and I suspect still are total a$$holes and without proof of the second incident - this was BC (Before Cellphones) all the restaurant would have to do would be to deny it happened.
