SEATTLE - The general manager at a restaurant at Seattle's University Village is apologizing to a mother after one of its employees told a breastfeeding mother to cover up.
"There shouldn't be a stigma about breastfeeding," mother Lauren Hernandez said.
Hernandez was having lunch at Piatti Sunday afternoon.
She was with her 9-month-old son, Bob, who started getting fussy.
"While I was nursing him, the hostess came up to me and told me to cover up because people had complained," Hernandez said. "And I told her 'I think it's illegal for you to tell me to cover up' and she said 'No, we just had training on it.'"

Actually, that saying about seeing breasts used to go:
“If you seen one breast.....you’re probably gonna see the other one!”
This no doubt originated in the days before public breastfeeding went militant. It was kind of a single guy’s guide to enjoying the charms of the opposite sex.
Once you've "determined what's going on" it's too late. You already got a free shot.
Remember when people were naturally modest?
I can relate to this woman. I was once asked to leave church for nursing a beer.
; )
No, normal men who don't want to be accused of "staring", of being a "lecher". Parents of young children who don't want to have to get into "that discussion" until the kids are older and not in a public restaurant.
Yes, breast feeding is "perfectly natural" and a good thing. However, in our culture, the breast is continually promoted as an "eye magnet" for men, a primary fashion accessory, a means for some women to "tease" men. The fact that we men are simple minded and genetically wired to notice does not make it easy for us to remain polite and avoid staring.
Just as a gentleman will not stare, a lady will use a cloth to cover the actual transfer of that wonderful, life sustaining, "organic" nutrient.
Just avoid the "Free Range" aspect of the process.
I’ve seen women breast feeding at Mass, under a shawl, very discreet. Some people probably don’t approve of that either.
In her case, a mighty big shawl...
I used to breastfeed in public but I did it discreetly (covered). Not hard to do once I got used to it.
So, I guess she doesn’t mind if I take photos and post to a BBW porn site.
Exactly.
The patrons had requested she cover her face.
Well said!
Take a picture and thank her. Tell her it’s for you website “publicmilkbags.com”
That’s kindof key.
Is OK for guys to sit around and watch? Make few light comments? I don’t think so...but presentation for view is presentation for view.
When one of my friends is breastfeeding and things slip, is it a big deal? I don’t think so either...at least an attempt is being made at modesty, so a sort of privacy can still be respected.
Next up, a law enforcing SEVERE DRACONIAN PENALTIES on anyone who tells a breastfeeder to cover-up.
I know these people like the back of my hand.
How old is that kid?
Why can't those complainers go eat their breakfast in the restroom?
That’s what my wife did and it’s what most civilized cultures do
Go in the bush and it’s more flagrant
A medical intern actually passed his OB/GYN certification with this answer as to why breast milk is better for infants than formula:
It’s always fresh; the cats can’t get at it; and it comes in such a cute little container.
;^)
Thank you for the public service.
