With the probable exceptions of this cycle and George W., there is a Republican pattern: Bush was left of Reagan, Dole left of Bush, McCain to the left of Dole in many ways, and Mittens to the left of McCain. Even George W. is arguably fiscally fairly left, given that he had Congress and let deficits continue to roll.
