NYC has a good track record in avoiding this horror post 9/11 - even with the idiot mayor. I’m sure your son will be safe.
I work in NYC and I can tell you the security is very good there. I can also tell you however that the city is flooded with tourists this time of year, especially between Christmas and New Year’s. There are probably more people in NYC that particular week than any other time of the year. Reason enough for me to steer clear of the tourist spots. Hopefully your son is doing the same.
My Brother is DC police, thinks himself immune to Evil like this, I Pray he and others do not find out the hard way they are NOT Immune to this Evil!
