15 families have arrived on the tiny island of Bute, off the West of Scotland
Scottish minister Humza Yousaf said their arrival was a 'proud day', adding: 'I would like to extend the warmest of welcomes on behalf of the people of Scotland, and wish them all the best as they start their new lives here.'
For her part, Home Secretary Theresa May tried to reassure locals by saying all arrivals would be screened to ensure they did not pose a security threat, amid fears that some would-be terrorists who have travelled to Britain posing as refugees.
Indeed, in September, a Lebanese minister, Elias Bou Saab, told Mr Cameron that two people out of every 100 in his country's refugee camps were IS radicals planning to infiltrate Europe.
The debate is compounded by that fact that while the red carpet has been rolled out for the refugees and much money spent on them, the council (which is dominated by the Scottish National Party) has ordered 'austerity' cuts.
Hundreds of jobs are threatened and a wide range of public services are at risk as the council tries to save £18 million over two years. School-crossing patrols and library services could be cut under a 'Service Choices' programmes, as well as teaching assistants, bin removals and street cleaning. Even Rothesay's Christmas lights may not be affordable and not switched on next year.
Yet the Syrians have been given free homes with new kitchens, carpets and washing machines.
Although this is one of the most impoverished parts of the UK, the Home Office says each adult migrant is eligible for £200 emergency cash to tide them over until they are given National Insurance numbers which will entitle them to claim state benefits.

To which I can attest having worked as an intercept radio operator for GCHQ up in Sutherland, North East Scotland. A small village of 600 souls and me from London. They did distill the finest whisky though there and still do. 1952, only one bright summers day. A bit off topic here on my part, but I wonder if this is a tactic to persuade the "refugees" to foist themselves on not so Merry Olde England?
Swedish authorities have had to deal with near riots when bussing the "refugees" to some tiny out of the way village. They refused to get off the bus. The same thing will be enacted in Canada with Justin Trudeau at the helm. He took off his coat and tie and handed a little girl "refugee" a nice winter coat. This on arrival in Canada. Heaven help the low income Canadian who desperately needs decent affordable housing.
It's about time they tested whether or not it really is safe for people to stay there. They would need to take plenty of antibiotics though. (It was used to test Britain's Biological Weapons during World War II and was so heavily contaminated with Anthrax spores that no one was allowed on it until 1990!)
Had it not been for "Operation Dark Harvest" the British government would never have paid for a thorough decontamination of the island and it would still be deadly.

Yes, about Idi Amin who took over when the white people ceded power from the countries they called Rhodesia. Now Zimbabwe. He still lives and seems indestructible. The only real currency really trusted is American one dollar bills. Not the 40,000 Zimbabwe dollar bill.
Your mention of a film sparked my memory on just the nicest little film about Scotland. It was called "Local Hero". Burt Lancaster starred. It was about a big oil company that wanted to buy a small Scottish coastal village. The idea was that the village would be changed for ever. One of those rare movies that made one feel good.

Actually, though i’m 47, I like movies with Burt, Betty Davis, Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Humphey Bogart, John Wayne of course...and alot more of that generation’s actors.

Yes, it got the BAFTA award as I read. I would not spoil it by recounting the very ending. It just was the most poignant yet telling finale.
Whoops! Another slip up here. I looked up the definition of poignant and this does not describe the final ending of this movie. Poignant does not usually make one feel good, as does the ending to this movie.

Let’s send our refugees to Nome, Alaska. They must live there for five years.
76000 Muslims plus 15 families (which btw I opposed) out of 5.5 million. Hardly swamped.
And there are some of us still worth something.
Because, despite public non-support, some (not all) Scottish councils decided to play aren’t-we-PC-wonderful, and tell the Scots govt they’d take some of the refugees.
In my neck of the woods, with 3 local councils, two said yes, one said no.
I opposed the refugees, but don’t think 15 families will ruin what is a lovely island. Besides they are whining about the weather already and will probably ask to go to S England/London, or go home. I hope.
I have nothing against genuine refugees, and am proud that the UK has taken in many over the years, from 1930s Jews to 1990s Bosnians. Its the security concern that worries me. And more strain on UK resources.
Any idea of the number of mosques in Scotland?

Actually it was 622 (1018-1640). 1642-51 was a Royalist vs Parlimentarian war. 1688 onwards was Jacobitism, which most Scots opposed. As in 1715 or 1745-46. And not all of us are scum, Scotland is full of good (if political misguided) people. Its noticeable that more and more Scots are waking up to the SNP and how we were almost conned last year.
