Up until last night, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) 100%‘s refusal to attack Donald Trump was defensible. Without question, it was smart politics, as his rise in the polls would attest. But it was also defensible on the merits as a guy who is a solid conservative in good standing, who was just refusing to criticize any of the other Republicans in the race, preferring rather to point out, like a good white knight should, how much better all the Republicans were than Hillary Clinton.

Last night, though, what the country watched was a Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) 100% who called Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) 94% a liar several times to his face, and also on more than one occasion treated him like someone who was ignorant of the issues. After the way Cruz has treated Trump throughout this contest, that’s a major prolbem.

Prior to last night, Cruz had engaged in substantive disagreements with some of the other candidates (including Rubio), but he had always kept it on an above the fray level. Even when Trump came after him personally, he responded with a tweet that was positively fawning towards the Donald in response

The friendly approach of both Cruz & Trump to each other is absolutely essential to the Conservative cause. Nothing could be more counter-productive than for either to try to take down the other.

Rubio has tried to drag Cruz down, and deserved his comeuppance. But that has nothing to do with the essential point.

While Cruz tends to be the ideologically most purely Conservative on most issues, while Trump is still getting his feet wet on the ideological aspects; his natural loyalty to the American ethos clearly is driving him in the same direction. The two are natural allies; and whichever comes out on top between the two, will clearly need the full support of the other in the election.

Their differing backgrounds also make them naturally complementary to one another--each helps flesh out the potential support for the other, which involve somewhat different political elements--but ones that can be natural allies.

No. Cruz is fine, the force is with him. Now Jeb Porkins: he's gotta problem there and should eject, but he thinks he can hold it.

Yo Leon! You're barking up the wrong tree. It's your guy Rubio ... who has a BIG reach-across-the-aisle "Romney-Like Problem":

Nice work and well stated. IMHO I would like to add what I consider an order of importance that must be honored; Donald must succeed in order for their to be an effective Cruz.

God bless America and Merry Christmas.

I agree. Cruz is pure class and I appreciated his and Trump’s civility in the debate. By the way, I’m listening to Rush and at the top of the hour, CBSNews said there were questions about whether Cruz may have divulged top-secret information in the debate last night. Can you believe it???!

I scanned the article looking in vain for a direct quotation of Cruz "in attack mode against" Rubio.

But I did find this:

"there's no argument that Rubio hasn't been, throughout his entire career stretching back to the Florida House of Representatives, a solid conservative who would be well to the right of any Republican Presidential nominee since at least Reagan (and probably even to the right of Reagan)."

Leon shouldn't mix meth and LSD while posting.
