A Virginia school district is defending a classroom assignment that required students to practice calligraphy by writing the Muslim statement of faith, "There is no god but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah."
Female students at Riverheads High School in Staunton, Virginia, were also invited to wear Muslim clothing -- a story first reported by The Schilling Show.
"Neither these lessons, nor any other lesson in the world geography course, are an attempt at indoctrination to Islam or any other religion, or a request for students to renounce their own faith or profess any belief," the district said in a statement provided to Fox News.
The Muslim-friendly calligraphy assignment took place in a world geography class. The teacher had the kids copy the Muslim statement of faith, also known as the shahada.
Parents told The Schilling Show that their children were not given the translation of what they were writing.
In other words, there were more than likely a few Christian teenagers in that room who had no idea they were writing, "There is no god but Allah."
But the school district doesn't seem to think that's a problem.
"The statement presented as an example of the calligraphy was not translated for students, nor were students asked to translate it, recite it or otherwise adopt or pronounce it as a personal belief," the district stated.
They said it was all about the art--not about the theology.
"They were simply asked to attempt to artistically render written Arabic in order to understand its artistic complexity," they stated.
And out of sheer coincidence -- out of all the Arabic words and phrases the teacher could have selected, she picked the Islamic statement of faith?

Well, then, apparently it was all good just so long as they didn’t know what they were writing. Ignorance is bliss. That’s what education is for nowadays?
I can’t ever imagine being given something to write by my own hand and by my own volition in a foreign language and not being told what it is, not in any school or college, or situation. That smacks of indoctrination. Isn’t that what public schools were created for, to get rid of illiteracy.
This is like taking advantage of people - children - because they’re illiterate, to warp their minds.
And words don’t matter in artwork, as long as the artwork doesn’t include words. The minute you include actual words from an actual language, they mean something. The school is hiding behind the Arabic illiteracy of the students to justify getting them to write something in a language they don’t understand, which is the statement of faith in Islam? Just incredible.
Some kids might even like how their artwork turned out and hang on to it, or even put it up somewhere. Maybe this was to prime them for a love for Islam so that they’ll at least accept it as something partly their own - by their own hands creating artwork (which has some natural self-love appeal to our human nature), so they can’t help but grow to love the subject a bit, and it’s no longer “foreign” to them, but familiar.
And of course, since these kids drew this phrase, the school thinks they’d never be curious about it and perhaps look it up. Apparently someone did, since none of them knew what they were writing at the time.
Certainly the media will accept and defend the school’s lame excuse, and brand anyone troubled by this as Islamophobic, racist and a fearful, paranoid conspiracy theorist.
As I saw someone else put it the other day, this will be “local news only.”
“Neither these lessons, nor any other lesson in the world geography course, are an attempt at indoctrination to Islam or any other religion, or a request for students to renounce their own faith or profess any belief.”
Taking them at their word (ha, ha), I propose the next writing assignment in calligraphy should be:
“May you have strength in the power of Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.”
Of course, if they are liars or Muslims, this may very well cause them to melt, figuratively if not literally.
Totalitarian leftists and Muslims worship the same god-Satan aka Allah.
Back during my school days, some friends and I went to an Arabic restaurant in New Haven, CT. One in our group, Mubarak (very much a Catholic, despite his name), knew Arabic.
I had no sense of atmosphere, so I kept on asking him about the stuff written on the wall hangings. He calmly said, “It’s Koran.” I didn’t pick up on his hint to drop it, and I badgered him, “Yeah, but whazit say?” “It’s Koran.”
Eventually, the fellow behind the main counter suggested that Mubarak didn’t know Arabic at all. Then Mubarak let out a stream that silenced the man.
“I speak what I like and to whom I like, and I will not perform for worms like you.”
Later he told me that he didn’t want to speak Arabic because he didn’t want to reveal his particular dialect.
Because it is the Saudis who are supplying the lesson plans and text books to American students.
I would write, “There is no god but God, and Jesus is his Son!”
Deus vult!
Calligraphy is one of the few arts that seems to have been developed to a world class in the Arab countries, perhaps because it is one of the few allowed forms of expression.
But maybe it wasn't the smartest idea to have public school kids copy the Shahada, if that is indeed what they were doing.
So, why is this? My theory is that the Powers-that-Be view Muslims as being more malleable and easily led than Judeo-Christians. Thus, easier to ram Socialism down their throats.
This ping list is for the "other" articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
This is exactly right. Those students will have to look over their shoulders for the rest of their lives.
The teacher needs to fired and also any administrator who did immediately intervene to stop this, and the school district needs to pay a large financial settlement to the students and their parents.
Square jawed woman.
Surprise. Surprise. Surprise.
and im sure muslims would have no problem being fed pork without knowing it... We didnt give them the ingredients... so why would that matter... or the prayer of salvation in latin...

Meeting About Riverheads Calligraphy Assignment Tonight
Regarding the assignment on Facebook, Riverheads parent, Kimberly Herndon, wrote on December 11:
“I am preparing to confront the county on this issue of the Muslim indoctrination taking place here in an Augusta County school. This evil has been cloaked in the form of multiculturalism.”
In the same post, she added:
“Christian girls in this class were called to volunteer to adorn the apparel of Muslim women. Unknowingly these children did so. Also unknowingly they were instructed to denounce our Lord by copying this creed of Islam.”

I heard from someone who teaches in the area that one of the local history teachers was teaching, in the classroom, that George Washington was a terrorist.
And that in a fairly small, relatively (by school standards) conservative district.
The kids probably did not know what they were writing.
Just some curly cue characters.
I am not sure what was the bizarre motivation of the teacher.
Just like writing 'Mohammad was a messenger from Satan' in some unknown language. What would have been the point?
That looks like the flames of Hell.
We have become a very sick society.
No child of mine would have ever utter those words or written them down for any reason. There are no worshipers of Satan in our house.......
