Cruz should very nicely respond something like this:

I like Donald Trump. I wish every American businessman were as successful as Donald Trump. We agree on many issues, disagree on a few. I am not going to attack him and get in a fight with him or any other republican candidate.

But Donald criticizes me for being unable to make deals. Well, it’s just this kind of deal making that got us in trouble. We don’t need deal-makers like McConnell, Boehner, and Ryan; we need someone with a proven record of standing up for the principles and values of the American people and the Constitution.

We cannot stop Trump or Cruz from taking shots at each other. But we at Free Republic need to stop backing either in such attacks. Whether one is for Trump or Cruz, it is counter-productive to the over-all cause of preserving traditional American values, to add fuel to what is clearly a tactical mistake on the part of both candidates.

There will come a time, when Conservatives need to rally behind a specific candidate, who is going to need support from the previous supporters of other candidates. Any one with common sense should have no problem understanding that, and keeping it ever in mind.

It is also obvious, that nothing we have said here, inhibits anyone from enthusiastically addressing any or every issue of policy.
