Good News: New NYT/CBS News Poll Shows Americans Oppose Assault Weapons Ban

Matt Vespa

12/11/2015 8:30:00 PM - Matt Vespa

Something I forgot to mention in my previous post about the NYT/CBS News poll showing terrorism fears reaching levels not seen since the immediate weeks after the 9/11 attacks-Americans are also not really getting behind the president's renewed call for a ban on assault rifles. Only 44 percent of Americans support the position, 50 percent oppose it.

The publication noted that support for this unserious gun control policy is now registering 19 points below how the public felt following the 2011 mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, which almost took the life of former Rep. Gabby Giffords (R-AZ).

With this poll, support for a nationwide ban on assault rifles has always, on average, cobbled a supermajority. This is the first time in 20 years that more Americans oppose this anti-gun position. Asked for supporting stricter gun laws to reduce gun violence, the nation is split 50/48 regarding whether it would be effective. Yet, 57 percent of Americans feel that guns prevent crime, and 56 percent say more concealed carry holders makes us safer. So, a lot of this comes down to a typical issue with polling: the wording. Nevertheless, assault weapons bans not receiving their typical level of support in 20 years from a left-leaning publication shows that Democrats might have exhausted this cornerstone of their gun control platform.

We had an “assault weapons ban” from 1994 to 2004, and it did little or nothing to reduce crimes committed with those kinds of weapons. Since the AWB expired, millions of AR-15’s and other similar guns have been sold and “high capacity magazines” as well. Even so, gun crimes are still on a downward trend and more people tend to trust government to keep them safe.

Every mass shooting in a “gun free zone” is blood on the hands of the gun banners. We need to start calling them Fish In A Barrel Shootings. Or maybe we should call them Joe Biden Shootings, since he was the main sponsor of the bill that established these gun free school zones.

Nice distinctions. Obama and Co, want our guns described in as horrific terms as possible, e.g. “assault weapons”. The 2nd Amend. simply calls them “arms”.
I suggest that we try to refrain from calling our firearms “weapons” unless the conversation is specifically about self defense (so that we can avoid a charge of being deceitful like gun grabbers).
A set of kitchen knives are tools for cutting, slicing or carving food or they could be weapons. But imagine Aunt Wanda’s expression if you are asked to carve the bird on the kitchen counter, and you ask her to pass you a large ‘shank`.

That was his past position, some time ago. Trump’s eldest sons are gun owners and are pro-Second Amnedment. They have their father’s ear, and I believe they have changed his mind. Such a ban would not get through Congress. The NRA still wields influence.

Okay, I checked and found the following, so you are correct, at least as of mid September.

A good sign that people are starting to understand the Threat We Face:

The political arm of the democrat=communist party, the Federal Government, the legal arm of the democrat=communist party, the Just Us Department along with the Supreme Court and the socialist Uniparty.

More and more people are understanding why the Founders demanded we have the 2nd Amendment.

Patriotic Americans can never relax when a democrat is President because they know socialist ideology will always trump We the People.

That’s because the public has wisened up to the arbitrariness of the AWB. If they really wanted to stop shootings they’d go after pistols, but that’s political suicide because most people are OK with them.

There is no “assault rifle.” Stop using their language. It’s simply an automatic rifle.

I will refer to them as the Democratic Party Response Team

Don't call them "democratic" anything. They don't go about things in a "democratic" way. They're a dictatorship - they tell us what we may or may not do, where we may or may not do it, how we may or may not do it, when we may or may not do it, and who we may or may not do it with. They're dictators, nothing less.

He is not above declaring Marshal Law though.

...and the people are not above marshalling all necessary and effective resistance to incapacitate such an unconstitutional action, methinks.

What makes you think people would actually do that?

I may be old and not in good health, but I'd willingly join in ousting him.
