Something I forgot to mention in my previous post about the NYT/CBS News poll showing terrorism fears reaching levels not seen since the immediate weeks after the 9/11 attacks-Americans are also not really getting behind the president's renewed call for a ban on assault rifles. Only 44 percent of Americans support the position, 50 percent oppose it.
The publication noted that support for this unserious gun control policy is now registering 19 points below how the public felt following the 2011 mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, which almost took the life of former Rep. Gabby Giffords (R-AZ).
With this poll, support for a nationwide ban on assault rifles has always, on average, cobbled a supermajority. This is the first time in 20 years that more Americans oppose this anti-gun position. Asked for supporting stricter gun laws to reduce gun violence, the nation is split 50/48 regarding whether it would be effective. Yet, 57 percent of Americans feel that guns prevent crime, and 56 percent say more concealed carry holders makes us safer. So, a lot of this comes down to a typical issue with polling: the wording. Nevertheless, assault weapons bans not receiving their typical level of support in 20 years from a left-leaning publication shows that Democrats might have exhausted this cornerstone of their gun control platform.
This is a first.
And we all know how terribly concerned the president and congress are about how we Americans feel and what we think.
Polls mean nothing to tyrants.
F U B O!
Well I would say since they are flying off the shelves and almost every gun owner in America has one we are all pretty much opposed to a ban on them. :-)
Well why ban them? I am pretty sure somebody would like to fill the bodies of the California shooters with lead and reduce their body count.
44% Socialist and Pansies
What is with the interchanging of “assault rifle” and “assault weapon”. They are two different things.
“Assault rifle” is an automatic weapon that is used by the military.
“Assault weapon” is a made up gun grabber term to scare the public.
Assault is a matter of intent, it is not innate in any weapon. The military is all about assault, ie they are on offense, so the term is appropriate.
A law abiding citizen purchases a weapon for defense not assault. To call a weapon an “assault weapon” only applies in how the weapon is used. It is not innate to any particular weapon.
Besides, we already had such a ban and it made no difference. Banning something that’s already invented and coveted doesn’t mean it’s banned. Look at the “success” of the War on Drugs.
This poll, along with others regarding what the press thinks verses the public, if accurate, reflects the beginning of the end of the so called mainstream press having such vast influence. And they only have themselves to blame as they prostituted themselves to the DNC. So, from this day on, I will refer to them as the Democratic Party Response Team
Assault is a behavior.
Americans like their modern sporting rifles.
If anyone can show me that Australians are safer now than they were before the gun confiscation, I'd like to see the statistics.
Many Americans are not so compliant to new restrictive gun laws. Look at the compliance rates in NY and CT. Even grossly fabricated data can’t get above 10% compliance. The truth is likely less than 1%.
NY sold something like 1,500,000 evil rifles. Only about 44,000 registered. Imagine the compliance of a non liberal state.
Trump is for an assault weapons ban.
Anyone ever consider the percentage of firearm homicides done with an AR? I would suspect it is quite low. See, the anti AR crowd loves to include suicide by firearm in the total number of firearm fatalities but since few if any are done with an AR, my sense is they will cite such a percentage comparison as bogus. That is laughable because it is the same skew as including firearm related suicides in the number of all homicides and making them appear as all violent assaults.
In other news, if I were any of todays politicians given how they have en masse sold this country down the river, I’d want all weapons banned too. If they look across the valley they may create by denying either Trump or Cruz an election run, they may be looking at an insurrection. They don’t get it, the electorate is tired of voting and the pols doing their best to avoid following the voters orders or worse doing the opposite. The inside the beltway crowd has declared war on the electorate and they may end up on the short end of the coming REV II.
You must not SHOOT BACK!!
You MUST NOT be ABLE to shoot back!!!
Now get back into your kennels.
Exactly!
It pisses me off when I hear cops call them ‘assault weapons.’ They are semi-automatic rifles.
They should know better....makes me think they, too, have an agenda.
Americans are demanding to be able to protect themselves from Black racists and Islamists that want to kill them. It is neither about race nor about religion. Liberals should stop “branding” what the public wants.
Or not.
That was his past position, some time ago.
Trump’s eldest sons are gun owners and are pro-Second Amnedment. They have their father’s ear, and I believe they have changed his mind. Such a ban would not get through Congress. The NRA still wields influence.
Trump once said he does not consider an AR-15 to be an ‘assault weapon.’
George W. was for such a ban, but he did not get his way.
