After two years of genteel coaxing of millions of Americans to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, the Obama administration has begun to turn up the heat with the threat of a sharp increase in tax penalties and other sanctions.
While many people found it far less expensive to pay a penalty than to enroll in a new government-subsidized health care plan, they will be in for a rude awakening if they try that again. In fact, in some ways it will be cheaper to purchase one of the more modest insurance plans than to pay the penalty.
For individuals who went without insurance in early 2015 although they were eligible to enroll, the average household penalty in 2016 will be $969 - a 47 percent increase over the average estimated penalty of $661 this year, according to a new analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation. People who are eligible for federal premium subsidies will have to pay an average household penalty of $738 in 2016 if they don't sign up, while the average household penalty will total $1,450 for uninsured people who are not eligible for any financial assistance.

How do you fine someone that has no job, no property, no assets and is spongeing off society?
That person can still get treatment a hospitals.

And those who voted for the scoundrels. And I hope that the people who wanted this monstrosity suffer great pain and that the IRS comes after them with a vengeance after they have refused to pay years of the penalty.
I believe that whatever outstanding debt to the IRS is rolled over to the next year and accumulates.
But doesn’t the penalty roll over to the next year? Plus interest and penalties?
If true, the amount owed after just a few years could be massive.
Exactly the problem.
Although since you have insurance, your medical bills are negotiated down by the insurance company. Still, $14,000 would buy a lot of trips to the doctor.
But Obamacare was supposed to solve this problem! We were promised! /sarc
Let the feasting on the sheep begin...
Maybe but unless you have a refund coming they cannot collect it.
The great news is that it comes out of their UNearned income tax credits!!! That is so wonderful!!
I don’t know about that. All £ know is that whatever refund you have coming, however you get a refund, that’s the only place fedgov can go to take money to pay your fine.
Wait, what??? I thought 0CommieCare was on it’s deathbed.
Of course not...the DC cesspool trough suckers will prop this monstrosity up, any way they can.
Most people who don’t have health insurance are on low income. They get a transfer of wealth even though they don’t earn it from other taxpayers. It is called the “Earned income credit” That is an oxymoron. But since that is an amount they get from the government, Obama will get his massive “ no insurance” penalties from that credit!! It is the law of unintended consequences!! We get the money back!! YAAAAHHHHOOOOO . And they are still uninsured!!
And he can still blame it all on his enemies.
“The freeloaders who voted him in thought that they would be able to simply walk into the hospital and get free care without having to do anything.”
One woman who worked in a hospital (I think as a nurse) called in to the rush limbaugh show. She said the very day after obama signed obamacare, two ladies walked into their emergency room looking for treatment. When asked what insurance they had, one of the ladies said only one word: “Obama”. When asked again what insurance they had, came back the same one word response: “Obama”.
I will not comply.
The deductable is $6000 the max out of pocket is $6250.
Go figure.
In a way, I am looking forward to next year. That is when the “stupid people” who supported this thing will start feeling the pain. About May/June is when many people get (or won't get) their refunds. It will be a good time to remind them who forced Obamacare on everyone. THE DEMOCRATS!
It may accumulate. The debt is not owed to the IRS, IRS is just the collection vehicle, and if you never have money coming back from a tax return they cannot go fter anything else to collect it.
