Meacham: Obama Reminds Me of Carter—'Crisis of Presidency, Not of Country'
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Jon Meacham is no conservative. The Pulitzer-winning historian is, after all, a former editor of Time and Newsweek. Which makes his declaration about President Obama that much more damning.

Asked on today's Morning Joe for a historical analogy to Barack Obama, Meacham harkened back to Jimmy Carter: "three years into his administration, [Carter] giving a speech about this very subject, saying that there was a crisis of the American spirit . . . And a lot of people thought that there wasn't a crisis in the American spirit, there was a crisis in the American presidency. And I think that's the analogy that comes to my mind."

Historian Jon Meacham is no conservative. Yet he made these absolutely damning comments about Obama today, comparing him to Carter at his “malaise” worst.

Ping to Liberal Media Criticism list.

Meacham has actually been critical of Obama for some time. Over four years ago, he said he thought Obama was “in the wrong business.”

Politically, it does feel like 1980 all over again. And, I would note, that Trump is being reviled in the exact same way and by the exact same people (or their political heirs) as was Ronald Reagan.

The only question is: how much has the American demographic and its electorate changed? They did, after all, elect Clinton and Obama, neither of whom would ever have been elected by Americans voting in 1980.
