The Trumpster as Joker: Can He Go All the Way?
The American Spectator ^ | December 11, 2015 | Andrew B. Wilson

Posted on 12/11/2015 1:58:25 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Art imitates Life, but sometimes(to paraphrase Oscar Wilde), Life outdoes the weirdest Art....

In a key scene in the movie, the Joker's voice comes over the loudspeaker on two ferry boats that have lost power and are wallowing in the water. Both are loaded with explosives. He tells the people trapped aboard the two powder kegs that they are part of a "social experiment"-there being a detonator on each boat that will blow up the other boat. If one does not destroy the other by midnight, he will destroy both boats. And so a countdown begins, with scenes of chaos, soul-searching, and moral argument on each of the crowded boats.

More than just mocking political correctness(something he does brilliantly), Donald Trump seems to take mischievous delight in forcing people to make agonizing(and, in any normal situation, wholly unnecessary)decisions. How else is one to explain his most recent proposal in calling for a "total and complete shutdown" of further travel into the U.S. by any one of the world's 1.6 billion Muslims?

This is one way of calling out the Obama administration-and the president himself-on a long and shameful history of thinking(and trying to get others to think)that the best way to deal with the threat to U.S. security posed by the growing appeal of Islamic fundamentalism is to pretend that it doesn't exist.

...Daniel Henninger captured his effect upon the current political scene...saying:

>>>The New York City prankster travels from state to state opening the nation's political fire hydrants, and no one seems able to stop the result: years of pent-up political and cultural contempt pouring into the streets.<<<

....... [biggest problem] awful choice if [Trump] and Hillary were to square off in the general election-truly a choice between a fire-hydrant-busting(or worse)Joker and the least trustworthy and possibly the most corrupt politician in Gotham City........

"....In 2012, as Obama was running for re-election, Trump called Clinton "terrific" again in an interview with Fox News, saying she performed well as Secretary of State.

"Hillary Clinton I think is a terrific woman," he told Greta Van Susteren. "I am biased because I have known her for years. I live in New York. She lives in New York. I really like her and her husband both a lot. I think she really works hard. And I think, again, she's given an agenda, it is not all of her, but I think she really works hard and I think she does a good job. I like her."

And on Fox and Friends on Wednesday, Trump explained why he donated to Clinton's campaigns.

"I'm a businessman. I contribute to everybody," Trump said. "When I needed Hillary, she was there. If I say 'go to my wedding,' they go to my wedding."... When Donald Trump Praised Hillary Clinton

People normally invite others to their wedding who are happy to do so.

Their wedding.

Trump Doesn't Represent the Conservative Base - ".........Which brings me to Donald Trump, the new leader of a very loud "silent majority." I keep hearing that Trump poses a grave threat to the GOP because he pits "the conservative base" against the presumably more liberal "GOP establishment."

The first part is true: He does pose a threat to the GOP. But are the labels right? For starters, the so-called "establishment" is more conservative than any time in GOP history.

Until Trump descended his golden escalator, the "conservative base" generally referred to committed pro-lifers and other social conservatives. The term also suggested people who were for very limited government, strict adherence to the Constitution, etc. Most of all, it described people who called themselves "very conservative."

While it's absolutely true that Trump draws support from people who fit such descriptions, it's far from the entirety of Trump's following. According to polls, Trump draws heavily from more secular Republicans who are more likely to describe themselves as "liberal" or "moderate" than "conservative" or "very conservative." Ted Cruz draws more exclusively from the traditional base.

And I would argue that his "very conservative" followers aren't supporting Trump because he's a conservative but because he's a walking, talking thumb in the eyes of "elites" in the media and both parties........

With the exception of a few single-issue voters on immigration, Trump fans love him for his enemies and for his populist bombast, not for any specific principles. In other words, he divides the GOP more up-down than he does left-right.

Trump defenders can rightly point to the fact that he draws support from a wide swath of voters. Critics can rightly point out that he draws animosity from an even wider swath of voters. But neither should go around talking about how Trump represents the conservative base."

Ted Cruz is a religious conservative. Beyond that he's as much a RINO/liberal puppet of corporate cronies as the rest of DC.

Wooo. he's "conservative" because he called McConnell a liar and he says things like "Washington Cartel" While out of the other side of his mouth he wants an increase in green cards to make illegals legal (AKA back door amnesty).

The self-proclaimed "constitutionalist" had to be schooled by Trump and Levin on the unconstitutional anchor babies acts.

The self-proclaimed "conservative constitutionalist" signed his own constitutional veto rights away in favor of giving unconstitutional rights to Obama for giving Iran a nuclear bomb...AND in the same deal calling for US to protect Iran from Israel. You can call that "conservative" I call it treason.

Cruz and others may one day have blood on their hands for signing that bill.

Conservative my ass.

So now (that is, TODAY) Trump is scaring the crap out of Hillary and Dems. Gov. Ed Rendell said Trump appeals to "thoughtful, reasonable people" in the Dem Parrty and cover story on Drudge says Dems clueless how to deal with him. "Hillary is no longer laughing."

BWA hahaha.

FR thread" On Private Fundraiser Recording Ted Cruz Says "Gravity" Will Undo Trump and Carson"

"Here's some of what Cruz had to say about Trump and Carson (via the Times):

>>>I like and respect both Donald and Ben. I do not believe either one is going to be our nominee. I don't believe either one is going to be our president. I think both of them, their campaigns have a natural arc. And with both of them I think gravity is pulling them down... Carson is further in that descent. You look at Paris, you look at San Bernardino, it's given a seriousness to this race, that people are looking for: Who is prepared to be a commander in chief? Who understands the threats we face? Who am I comfortable having their finger on the button? Now that's a question of strength, but it's also a question of judgment. And I think that is a question that is a challenging question for both of them. So my approach, much to the frustration of the media has been to bear hug both of them, and smother them with love. People run as who they are. I believe gravity will bring both of those campaigns down, I think the lion's share of their supporters come to us.<<<
