Ted Cruz votes against amendment that would block Donald Trump's proposed religious test for Muslims

Four Republican senators .. including presidential candidate and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.. voted against a resolution that affirmed there would be no religious test for people entering the United States.

The non binding amendment was attached to an unrelated security bill and read that, "It is the sense of the Senate that the United States must not bar individuals from entering into the United States based on their religion, as such action would be contrary to the fundamental principles on which this Nation was founded."

Cruz did not attend the meeting, so it was not immediately clear why he opposed the resolution that was aimed at formally rejecting Donald Trump's widely panned plan to bar Muslims from entering the country.

However, Cruz hasn't joined the chorus of other candidates in criticizing the ban, having said instead that he "[commends] Donald Trump for standing up and focusing America's attention on the need to secure our borders." According to Politico, "Several Democrats grinned visibly when Cruz's proxy vote of 'no' was cast, with one uttering into a hot mic: 'Ohhh yeah.'"

Only some of them. Until we get better at telling them apart, the ban is appropriate.

Their are many weird religions in the U.S. and plenty of godless atheists as well. Man answers to God, not man for these things. So while I see all Muslims as eternally wrong, I am not against their right to answer for that error to God, not the state. EXCEPT when they are intent on a mass murdering revolution they call jihad.

Wait a minute, didn't Trump come out and say what he said about banning Muslims, just this past week (12/7)? And yet, here is Ted Cruz's bill banning Muslim Syrian refugees from entering the United States that he submitted in November, before Trump said anything about banning Muslims.

Unless I missed something, how is that "riding Trumps coattails"?

Get with the program. Cruz is a phony RINO who is only talking tough ever since his campaign started.

The guy even donated to Hillary for crying out loud! Wait a minute that wasn’t Cruz....

Cruz did not even attend the symbolic meeting, he voted for one reason, to continue to ride Trump’s coattails, despite saying that it ‘wasn’t his plan’. Very transparent.

I guess it has escaped you that Donald Trump has been a consistent constitutional conservative and American patriot in the US Senate? You might do better by attacking folks & candidates who actually attack your candidate (Donald Trump) and who are supported by the GOPe.

No, Rubio is not on the 20-member committee that voted on this. He’ll have a chance later, perhaps. That is, if he actually votes on issue...he’s missed many votes.

It is a sense of the Senate, so not a law, has no effect.

FGS, it isn’t a religion, it’s a culture that is at odds with western civilization....and hell-bent on destroying it and subjugating non-moslems.

This was the bill that Cruz and Rand voted on.

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=114&session=1&vote=00323

The bill was introduced by rand.

Rand brought the subject up before cruz did:
