Facing harsh criticism for his proposal to temporarily halt Muslim immigration to the U.S., Donald Trump on Wednesday said he was acting in the Islamic community's best interests.
"I'm doing good for the Muslims," Trump told Don Lemon in an interview for "CNN Tonight." "Many Muslim friends of mine are in agreement with me. They say, 'Donald, you brought something up to the fore that is so brilliant and so fantastic.'"
Among those reaching out to thank him, the Republican front-runner said, was "one of the most important people in Middle East" -- Trump didn't reveal the name -- who called on Wednesday to say, "Donald, you're doing a great service."
"I have many friends who are Muslims," Trump told Lemon. "They're phenomenal people. They are so happy at what I'm doing."
The feeling, he said, is mutual.
"I love the Middle East," Trump declared. "I love the people of the Middle East."
Trump also said his plan had been misrepresented and explained that the immigration ban may not last long.
"It could go quickly, but it's a subject that has to be discussed," he said, adding that there would be exceptions for Muslim athletes and diplomats.

0bama and the Clintons proved you can lie to all of the people all of the time.
So why not Trump?
I can believe this.
IF White Christian terrorists, were using my community to hide in while planning acts of mass murder designed to format open war between Christians and everyone else in the world, I would do everything I could to help the Police root them out so my love ones were safe from being caught in the cross fire.
That US Muslim groups, like CAIR, are more worried bout protecting, then catching, Islamic terrorists hiding in the communities, indicates CAIR values are fundamentally at odds with those of American Voter
Has any study been performed on the Trump supporters to determine if they represent the income tax payers in the country?
But what is the truth of the matter? Is Trump's proposal illegal? Is his proposal un-Constitutional? Is his proposal un-American?
In an effort to inform American citizens of the facts and help answer these questions, please read the following.
Whenever the president finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, the president may, by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.
This is in the U.S. Code of Laws. It was passed by Congress in 1952 and has been the law of the land ever since. And, by the way, at the time it was passed by a Democratic Congress.
So, to be clear, if the President determines that murders/killers/enemies are infiltrating any group of people to do harm to America, he has been given the power by Congress to stop or restrict that groups immigration or non-immigration status and ability to come into the country by proclamation. This is precisely what Trump has proposedâ¦and for obvious reasons.
It is NOT un-American, it is U.S. Law.
It is NOT un-Constitutional, Article 6 Paragraph 3 of the U.S. Constitution regarding no religious test refers specifically and only to the election of Congress...not to immigration.
As President, Donald Trump would have full legal authority under U.S. Law to do exactly what he has proposed.
All of the hype, outrage, and statements to the contrary are either political grandstanding, abject ignorance of the law, or willful lies regarding the issue.
Not that I know but I can tell you that at my salary level I sure as hell am supporting the leeches of the country!
I’m sure Gloria Scum-red is hiring foreign immigrants to swear that he grabbed their asses or something. That 4-year-recurrence of scum will come up with something.
I generally support Trump's moratorium idea, but I don't support bullshit superlatives like that above......
“........temporarily halt Muslim immigration to the U.S., Donald Trump on Wednesday said he was acting in the Islamic community’s best interests.”.........
Actually, Trump is doing this in the best interest of ALL people living in America, Muslims included. There are good Muslims here, its the radical’s that make it bad for the rest.
I’m not a Trump supporter, but by now I have learned to apply a verbal “graphic equalizer” to his statements. “Greatest” means good. “Phenomenal” means accomplished. “I love” means they are friends or at least business associates. Etc.
And in this case, “everyone” means everyone except for “diplomats” (of course) and athletes (?).
The core Trump constituency is working class whites.
They pay taxes.
I am sure that some of Trump’s best friends are from the Middle East...
Actually, the radicals are the good Muslims, the good people that don’t want to support the terrorists are bad Muslims.
“I generally support Trump’s moratorium idea, but I don’t support bullshit superlatives like that above......”
LOL! I support Trump, but yeah, that is some bulldazzle.
As long as they don't plan on traveling abroad early in a Trump presidency.
Does he know any other way to speak?
It’s YUGE!!!
You realize that if you can come up with a Trump/English - English/Trump dictionary you'll make a fortune?
WOW! Thanks for the law lesson
Yeah, there is this fundamental honesty problem about “good Moslems”. As Erdogan pointed out, there is no moderate or immoderate Islam. There is only Islam. Their book says to kill us all, wherever we may be found, if we reject Islam. So the “good Moslems” are either hypocrites or deceivers saying they don’t believe that.
A non-homicidal Moslem is like a non-supremacist Nazi, or a non-socialist Marxist. Truly absurd. Violent proselytizing is MANDATED in Islam.
