The Syrian Turkmen taking flight from Russian bombing

By Nafiseh Kohnavard BBC Persian, on the Turkey-Syria border

4 December 2015

Since Russia began air strikes on the Turkmen mountains in north-west Syria last month, nearly 5,000 people from the country's ethnic Turkmen minority have fled their homes.

Many have crossed the border into Turkey's Hatay province, their plight overshadowed by a diplomatic row between Turkey and Russia.

Turkey has been open in offering support, with officials referring to the Turkmen brigades as "brothers" and insisting they are moderate.

However reports suggest the brigades have close ties to the al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group, the Nusra Front. Conflicting claims

Usama Solak, a member of the Syrian-Turkmen assembly - a coalition of Turkmen political groups - does not deny the connection.

"Right now we have two major enemies - the Syrian regime and Daesh [IS]," he says. "We are helping the Nusra Front and they are helping us. They are not like IS."

Al-Nusra is al-Qaeda in Syria. Are we supposed to make nice with them now because ISIS is scarier than al-Qaeda?

Putin's "Kill 'em All" policy is the way to go. When was the last time Kerry mentioned 'al-Qaeda' as the bad guy in Syria? It's like they think we can't keep more than one bad Muslim group in our brains at the same time.

I just saw a BBC documentary produced on 2005 on the effects of the Hiroshima nuke we dropped in WWII. It was only 15KT, but took out the city.

If our dear leader had any stones, he would have used a few of these on this butchers, thrown in Tehran for free, and stabilized the Middle East.

Erdogen is not a "moderate".

''The whole earth has been declared unto me a mosque' (Muhammad: Sahih Muslim, Book 004, Number 1062).'

'The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets and the faithful our soldiers.'(Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan, Prime Minister of Turkey since 2003.)'

Or they don’t want US thinking about more than one threat at once. What’s the common denominator? Oh heck, I don’t even have to say it.

Turkey is aiding and supplying ISIS. Turkey is our ally. Turkey is in NATO. Turkey does whatever the US tells them to do. Turkey buys US military hardware. Turkey shot down a Russian Jet. I believe the US set this up for Turkey to do it. Obama thinks he can bulldog everyone including Putin. I believe Nuclear war is on its way to the USA, thanks to Obama. He threatens any country, and anyone that pushes back he sends in terrorists to overthrow them and destroy their countries, and he tells others if you do get on board with him, he’s overthrow you. Putin won’t give in, and Obama thinks he is a god or something. This will only end badly

I agree with you on all points except for a general nuclear exchange. Russian use of several tac nukes in the theater however would not surprise me. That will be the final warning.

A nuclear war is scary to Russians as well as to you. Putin hasn't taken a military revenge for that bomber, guess why. The straights and the Turkey's NATO membership mean something, aren't they?

Russia moving into the Middle East under the pretense of fighting terrorism is like the Mafia moving to your neighborhood under the pretense of moving out a violent street gang, then taking over the neighborhood and setting up a permanent base there to do typical Mob "business".

Russia will grow wealthier, more powerful, more aggressive in their overall expansionist agenda (in Eastern Europe, eventually elsewhere), and much more of a threat to the US and its allies throughout the region and the world.

Sure it's great IF they actually do get rid of ISIS (we shall see). But having a country like Russia step in and gain such huge strategic advantage over the US and its allies is nothing we should be cheering about.

If Obama was serious about wanting to take out ISIS, which I don't believe he ever was - I think he and Putin are in cahoots in a scheme to basically bring back the Soviet Union. This despite his and Kerry's public moans and groans. Because Obama, Kerry, and many others in Obama's circle were loyal supporters of the Soviet Union, as I'm sure were many of the FR putinistas. Makes me wonder if ISIS was a KGB-like invention of the Russians, created to give them cover for expanding and growing more powerful.

Putin has stated that he believes the demise of the (mass-murdering, communist) Soviet Union was the "worst geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century". He has also said he thinks Stalin deserves to have statues in his honor. He clearly is out to restore the old Soviet Union, or something similar to it. And nothing would make the FR Putinistas happier. Obama is the best friend Russia has yet had in the White House. He's gone out of his way to insure that they reemerge as a global superpower, with his traitorous missile defense and NewSTART nuke deals.

The Russians are masters at the complex game of chess, thinking many moves ahead of their opponents, while most of us, unfortunately, seem to have trouble playing checkers.

The reality is that al-Qaeda and ISIS have become useful idiots to many interested parties in the Mideast. Thanks to Obama clearing the way for Iran to be a regional leader, the Shia Crescent that King Hussein bin Talal of Jordan warned about, is becoming a reality. ISIS and by extension Al-Queda are de-facto partners to fight the Iran Shia Crescent. Turkey knows this, Jordan knows this, Saudi Arabia knows this, Iraq's Sunni Tribal leaders know this and I suspect, smarter elements in the West know this.

Turkey realizes that defeating ISIS for now mean Iran and Russia run the middle east. Now that Russia is supporting Assad, there is no way the WEST and Sunni Middle east is going to overthrow Assad. Stalemate war with ISIS as the useful idiot will be the policy until Obama is gone.

The problem is by withdrawing the satellites - or to use a local term from ancient Persian history - the local "satraps" are calling the shots and ignoring the capital (aka the USA).

The USA should have a policy of "shut up and sit down and behave" but it seems Obama is following the Saudi plan in Syria.

This happened before after WW2 - the USA had to tell the locals to "shut up and sit down" over the Suez Canal crisis. It told all parties to return to their corners and the USA valued stability and peace over one party dominating another - it worked for half a century until now.

Let’s see, ISIS massacred the Turkmen and the Turkmen are targets of Putin the Pedophile’s forces in Syria. That says a lot.

It's either the caliphate or Russia.

Russia led by Putin is our last bastion until we elect Trump, or Cruz.

Have you noticed that despite the personable attacks against Trump and Putin, they keep getting stronger all the time. A good example of truth, ideas and deeds winning out in the end.
